action

Raoul Lamarre is an aspiring boxer . During the victory celebration after his most recent fight, he made a bet that he could punch through a door. He succeeds in doing this, but breaks his slap hand in the process, which means the end of his boxing career. To make ends meet, he hires out as a helper for a traveling showman group , a group of female wrestlers . Raoul sees the wrestler Rosie there for the first time. It will be a few months before the wrestling show comes back to town. This time, Raoul and Rosie fall in love, much to the displeasure of Mike, the wrestler's manager; he is secretly in love with them as well. Raoul and Rosy get married and Raoul becomes part of the wrestling show, the undisputed star of which, however, is Rosie. Raoul cannot cope with his wife's success and the couple eventually divorce.

While Rosie becomes engaged to Mike, Raoul has a relationship with Charlotte. When Mike announces his wedding to Rosie during one of the wrestling shows, Raoul decides to try a comeback as a boxer; he hopes to win back Rosie's respect. Raoul has no chance against his opponent Bill, however, and receives a crushing defeat. Rosie in the audience realizes that she still has feelings for Raoul and beats up Bill. Mike now realizes that Rosie is still in love with Raoul. An argument ensues in which the two split up. After Rosie leaves him, Mike suffers a heart attack.

When Rosie tries to return to Raoul, however, she sees him with his new girlfriend Charlotte. She leaves town disappointed. Raoul only finds out about this later; he immediately goes looking for Rosie. He finally finds her as a waitress in a harbor bar, and they embrace.

production

The director Mario Monicelli , who was nominated for two Oscars in the 1960s, filmed the novel by Carlo Brizzolara from 1971. The film was shot on location in France and Belgium, as well as in the Safa Palatino Studios in Rome . United Artists took over the film distribution in Germany . At the side of Gérard Depardieu , the American actress and stunt woman Faith Minton played her first and only leading role, until then she had only played a few, small roles.

criticism

“A heavyweight catcher is being courted by two strong men, which not only leads to turbulence, but of course also to a happy ending. An undemanding entertainment film that casually ironically takes up the problem of traditional gender behavior. Cheerful and sentimental at the same time, mostly well staged. "
