Riccardo Freda

Riccardo Freda (born February 24, 1909 in Alexandria , Egypt , † December 20, 1999 in Paris ) was an Italian film director and screenwriter .

Life

Freda was born in Alexandria to Italian parents. He later grew up in Milan , where he studied at the university, became a sculptor and later an art critic for "Il Popolo di Lombardia". In the mid-1930s, Freda worked under Luigi Freddi in the political administration of the film industry in Fascist Italy and shortly afterwards began his film career in 1937 as a screenwriter and production assistant for “Tirrenia” and later for “Elica Films”. Up until his directorial debut, he wrote numerous screenplays for directors such as Gennaro Righelli and Raffaello Matarazzo . With his first film Don Cesare de Bazan began a series of successful works, whereby he concentrated on period films , which found especially large audiences. After that he turned to mythological film; with I vampiri in 1956 he was also one of the pioneers of the Italian horror film , for which he submitted early masterpieces.

Freda was also known for the mastery of crowd scenes, so that he took over the direction of the 2nd staff for some films.

Freda was married to the Italian actress Gianna Maria Canale . One of his pseudonyms was George Lincoln
