Gianna Maria Canale

Gianna Maria Canale (born September 12, 1927 in Reggio Calabria , † February 13, 2009 in Florence ) was an Italian film actress .

Life

Canale worked as a Florentine stenographer until she took part in the Miss Italia election as Miss Calabria in 1947 . At this point she had already appeared in two extras. Canale took second place in this election. This placement gave her greater fame, which led to a second engagement by the director Riccardo Freda . While filming The Mysterious Chevalier , the two began an affair. Shortly afterwards they went to Brazil together, presumably due to the fact that Freda was still married at the time. Two films were made during her stay in Brazil. In the course of her twenty-year career, Canale made a total of thirteen films with Freda, whom she also married after his divorce.

Although Canale made mostly adventure and period films, her roles outside of these genres receive the most attention. Her part in the comedy Totò le Mokò and her appearance in the horror film The Vampire of Notre-Dame from 1956 are noteworthy . One of her most famous roles was that of Silvia Alberti in Vittorio de Sica's film Il boom , in which Alberto Sordi is her film partner. Her filmography, which begins in the second half of the forties and ends in the first half of the sixties, includes Italian, seven French and four English-language productions. The latter attest to their failed attempts to make a name for themselves in the USA (1951) and in the United Kingdom (1958–1960). When she was forced to look for character roles at an advanced age, she preferred to leave the film business. This decision becomes understandable in view of the fact that it is above all her attractive appearance and excellent photogenicity that is mentioned in articles about her.

Gianna Maria Canale died on February 13, 2009 in Florence at the age of 81.
