Monty Berman

Nestor Montague "Monty" Berman (born 1912 in Whitechapel , London , England , † June 14, 2006 in London, England) was a British film and television producer , cameraman and director .

Life

Berman attended University College School in Hampstead and began his career as a camera assistant at the age of 17 . In 1934 he got a job with the Associated British Picture Corporation and worked, among other things, on Michael Powell's documentary The Edge of the World . During the Second World War he served in the British Army , where he met Robert S. Baker . After the war ended, they both founded the film production company Tempean Films in 1948 . In addition, Berman worked in the late 1940s as a camera assistant on some British film productions, including as assistant to Robert Krasker on The Third Man . From the late 1940s to the late 1950s, Berman and Baker produced over 30 B-movies with their production company , some of which Berman was also involved in as a cameraman and director, including the comedies A Date With a Dream and Melody Club with Terry -Thomas in the lead role. Outstanding from her film productions was the war film The Black Devils by El Alamein from 1958, which was nominated for three British Film Academy Awards .

Berman and Baker made a successful entry into the television business in 1962 when they secured the television rights to Leslie Charteris ' Simon Templar and sold the series to ITV . The crime series starring the young Roger Moore was a great success. As a result, Berman developed several other television series such as The Baron , Department S and Jason King for ITV and produced Randall & Hopkirk - Detective Agency with Ghost and Gene Bradley on a secret mission . It was a feature of many of these series that American actors were hired for the leading roles ; Steve Forrest , Joel Fabiani and Gene Barry among others .

After his series Jason King and Gene Bradley on a secret mission in the early 1970s could no longer follow up on the previous successes, Berman withdrew into private life.
