The black devils of El Alamein (original title: Sea of ​​Sand ) is a British war film directed by Guy Green from 1958.

action

North Africa in World War II : A British patrol from the Long Range Desert Group special unit is sent to Amara, 400 miles away. There the troops are supposed to blow up the German army's fuel depots. The newcomer Captain Williams, a mining expert, cannot make friends with the casual manner of the other men. He also doesn't get along with the group commander, Captain Cotton.

On the way to Amara, the men encounter a German tank. The fight costs some members of the force their lives. After further fighting with the Germans, they reach Amara and can fulfill their mission. On the retreat, however, the troops suffered heavy losses. The radio will also be destroyed. Cotton, Williams and a handful of men now have to flee through the desert on foot.

The troops are watching a British and a German patrol. Both opponents know nothing about each other. Williams sacrifices himself by attacking the German command vehicle and thereby alerting the British. The British patrol can chase the Germans away and save the five remaining men. Important information can also be provided to the British troops for the upcoming battle for El Alamein.

The lexicon of the international film about the film: "Comradeship for life and death [...] celebrates its usual cinema-adventurous triumphs." Variety described the film as a non-original, routine war adventure with excellent action and tight directing.

Channel 4, however, was full of praise. The brilliant war film is satisfactory. Green has a knack for action and drives Attenborough and his colleagues to excellent presentations.

Awards

The film received three nominations for the British Film Academy Award . It was nominated for Best Picture and Best British Picture . Michael Craig received a nomination for Best British Actor .
