British Academy Film Award / Best British Film
Winner and nominee in the category of Best British Film ( Outstanding British Film ; from 1993 to 2007 Alexander Korda Award for the Outstanding British Film of the Year ) since the first presentation of the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA Awards) in 1948. To a possible To reduce the dominance of foreign and in particular US productions, a prize category was awarded for British productions in addition to the Best Film category. However, British films were often nominated in both categories. By 1968, the best British film was also considered with the award for the best (international) film in eight cases, before the category was dropped following a restructuring of the film award.
After criticism of the frequent award of American films arose, the award category was newly awarded as a special prize in 1993, named after the Hungarian-British film producer and director Alexander Korda (1893-1956). If a separate committee decided on the award in the first year, the BAFTA members can now vote regularly on the nominated films - but the nominations will still be made by a film committee. The classification of whether a film is British is based on the criteria of the UK Film Council , the British Film Institute (BFI) and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). According to this, films must have been made under the British official bilateral co-production agreements or meet the European Convention on Cinematographic Co-production or the Cultural Test (Appendix 1 of the Film Act 1985 ). Since the reintroduction of the category, the later Oscar- winning film The King's Speech has only been recognized as both Best British Film and Best Picture .
In 2004 and 2009, documentaries with Sturz ins Void and Man on Wire prevailed, and in 2006 an animated film with Wallace & Gromit - On the Hunt for the Giant Rabbit - a one-time animation film.
A film qualifies in the year preceding the award ceremony if it has been shown for a fee for at least seven days in a UK public cinema between January 1st and December 31st. The directors, screenwriters and max. three film producers.
