action

The childless couple Kate and Geoff are about to celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary, which is due to be celebrated on the following Saturday. In the middle of the preparations, Geoff found out through a letter that the body of his old love Katya, who had survived in the glacial ice of the Swiss Alps, was found after more than 50 years. She had a fatal accident on a mountain tour together in 1962.

Geoff is transported back in time by the news and toyed with the idea of traveling to Switzerland to see Katya's body. Kate first wants to find out more about Katya, but is soon taken aback by her husband's behavior: To indulge in old photos and travelogues, he steals into the attic at night and leaves the house early in the morning to go into town. Kate can't resist the temptation to rummage through Geoff's old boxes in the attic. She discovers that Katya was pregnant when she fell. As she falls asleep, she asks Geoff whether he and Katya would have married if she hadn't had an accident, to which he, at her insistence, affirms.

The days go by before the big party, and Kate's only wish is that the guests don't let their inner insecurities show. The party seems to have been a success, Kate and Geoff are chatting animatedly with the guests who have come to their honor. Finally, Geoff gives a poignant speech about his love for Kate until he ends his words in tears - just as Kate's friends predicted, because these are the moments when men would understand what is really important. After the dance that followed, Kate's inner conflict is clearly noticeable. When the song ends, she tears away from Geoff's hand.

reception

According to RBB , the majority of the viewers at the Berlinale premiere were particularly “very enthusiastic about Ramping's acting skills”. Holger Hettinger from Deutschlandradio Kultur interviewed Charlotte Rampling about her portrayal of Kate; her “game reduced to the limit” was a “great moment” in her career, according to Hettinger. As Rampling announced in the conversation, the greatest challenge for her was "to express everything without saying much".

In his review for the RBB , Fabian Wallmeier was also impressed by a "stunning Charlotte Rampling in the leading role". Charlotte Rampling embodies this Kate with “stunning accuracy, showing Kate's pride and fear of the emotional abyss that suddenly opens up with perfectly placed gestures and the smallest facial expressions”. All in all, according to Wallmeier, 45 Years is a "quiet, clever, carefully observing, touching and never kitschy film about love and the unreasonable demands that it can bring".

Tom Courtenay at the premiere in Berlin

Against the background of the awarding of the Silver Bears to Rampling and Courtenay for the best representation in the competition section of the 65th Berlinale, Wenke Husmann on ZEIT Online pays tribute to the “grandiose performance” of the two main actors, who are capable of “this dramatic chamber play without any Melodrama ”and describes 45 Years as the“ pearl of classical film art ”.
