David Constantine (2015)

David John Constantine (born 1944 in Salford ) is a British Germanist, writer and translator.

Life

David Constantine studied languages at Wadham College of Oxford University . From 1969 to 1981 he taught German at Durham University and then until 2000 at the University of Oxford. He is a Fellow at Queen's College , Oxford.

Constantine was co-editor of Modern Poetry in Translation magazine . Together with the Irish writer Bernard O'Donoghue , he is the publisher of the Oxford Poets book series at Carcanet Press .

Constantine translated texts and poems by Friedrich Hölderlin , Bertolt Brecht , Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , Heinrich von Kleist and from the French by Henri Michaux and Philippe Jaccottet . The translation of selected poems by Friedrich Hölderlin received the European Poetry Translation Prize in 1990 . The same price, now under the name Popescu Prize he received for the translation of Hans Magnus Enzensberger's poetry collection Lighter than air (Lighter than Air). When Publisher Penguin he had a contract for the translation of Goethe's Faust ; Faust: the first part of the tragedy was published in 2004, the second part in 2009.

Constantine has been nominated for various literary prizes and was awarded the first Runciman Award in 1986 for Early Greek Travelers and the Hellenic Ideal , and the Cholmondeley Award for poetry in 2002 . He was jury chairman for the TS Eliot Prize for a while . In 2015, his short story In Another Land was adapted by director Andrew Haigh for the film 45 Years .

Constantine is married to the translator Helen Constantine and they have two children.
