Karen Leeder (2020)

Karen Leeder (* 1962 ) is a Germanist, author and translator. She is Professor of Modern German Literature at the University of Oxford and was in charge of the humanities and social sciences department from 2016 to 2017. In 2017 she also became a member of the Royal Society of Arts .

Life

Karen Leeder was born in Derbyshire and lived in rugby , where she attended rugby high school and later rugby school . She studied German at Magdalen College (University of Oxford) and at the University of Hamburg . From 1990 to 1993 she taught at Emmanuel College (University of Cambridge) before taking the chair at New College (University of Oxford) in 1993 . In addition to ghosts and angels, her interests include German post-war literature, the literature of the GDR, German poetry in translation, Brecht and Rilke . She dealt with the latter in several of her publications. Her translations of the works of Volker Braun , Evelyn Schlag , Durs Grünbein and Ulrike Almut Sandig have won several awards. Together with Christopher Young and Michael Eskin , she is the editor of the de Gruyter series “Companions to Contemporary German Culture” (German companion to contemporary German culture). Her website "Mediating Modern Poetry" documents some of her recent activities. She is married to the philosopher and journalist Peter Thompson and has one daughter, Rosa Marriott Leeder.
