Michael Krüger (writer)
Michael Krüger (born December 9, 1943 in Wittgendorf , Zeitz district ) is a German writer , poet , publisher and translator .
Life
Michael Krüger grew up in a Protestant family in Berlin-Nikolassee . In his youth he sang in the church choir and was a member of the Christian Youth Union . After graduating from high school , he completed an apprenticeship as a publisher at Herbig-Verlag. He was also a guest student in philosophy at the Free University of Berlin . From 1962 to 1965 he worked as a bookseller in London .
From 1968 Krüger worked as a publishing editor at Carl Hanser Verlag . He became literary director of the publishing house in 1986 and managing director in 1995. He left on December 31, 2013 and his successor Jo Lendle took over the management.
In 1973, Krüger founded the first cooperatively organized author's bookstore in Munich together with Martin Gregor-Dellin , Jürgen Kolbe , Fritz Arnold, Paul Wühr , Inge Poppe , Christoph Buggert , Günter Herburger , Tankred Dorst and Peter Laemmle .
His own literary work was initially limited to forewords and epilogues to anthologies and edited volumes that he edited. It was not until 1976 that his first work, the volume of poetry Reginapoly, appeared . His first story entitled What to do? was published in 1984. In 1991 - one year after his novella Das Ende des Romans - his first of four novels was published under the title The Man in the Tower .
In July 2013, Krüger was elected by the members of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts as their president. He replaced Dieter Borchmeyer and held the office from July 2013 to June 2019. In 2015, he was curator of the Cologne literature festival Poetica .
