The Ernst Meister Prize for Poetry was founded in 1981 by the city of Hagen as a literary prize . It is intended to commemorate the Hagen lyric poet Ernst Meister .

The award has been presented every two to three years since 2001. It usually consisted of the main prize, endowed with 13,000 euros, and two advancement awards, each endowed with 2,250 euros ( Westphalian advancement award and general advancement award ). The main prize went to the work of an author who "expresses responsibility for language and poetry in a special way" (statutes). The additional prizes donated in 2001 were intended for young authors, one of whom should come from Westphalia . Since 2018, the prize has been awarded every two years with the support of the Fernuniversität in Hagen and Sparda-Bank West under the patronage of the Lord Mayor of Hagen and is now endowed with 5,000 euros.
