Lutz Seiler (born June 8, 1963 in Gera ) is a German writer . At first he emerged mainly as a poet . In 2014 he was awarded the German Book Prize for his debut novel Kruso . In 2020 he received the Leipzig Book Fair Prize for his novel Stern 111 .

Life

Lutz Seiler grew up in East Thuringia. His home village Culmitzsch in 1968 for uranium mining the Wismut looped, after which the family first to Korbußen moved until you finally a new flat in Gera- Langenberg was assigned. Here Seiler attended the polytechnic high school " Bruno Kühn ". In Gera he completed his vocational training as a construction worker and worked as a carpenter and bricklayer. He completed the basic military service of the NVA in Merseburg . During his time in the army he began to be interested in literature and to write himself. In the summer of 1989, Seiler worked as a seasonal worker on the island of Hiddensee ; an experience that he later processed in his debut novel. Until the beginning of 1990 he studied history and German at the Martin Luther University in Halle (Saale) . In 1990 Seiler went to Berlin, where he worked as a waiter for several years. From 1993 to 1998 he was co-founder and co-editor of the literary magazine moosbrand . Since 1997 he has headed the literary program at the Peter Huchel House in Wilhelmshorst near Potsdam. In 2004/2005 he was visiting professor at the German Literature Institute in Leipzig. Seiler lives as a freelance writer in Wilhelmshorst and Stockholm. He has been married to a Swedish Germanist since 2009.

Seiler has been a member of the PEN Center Germany since 2005 , since April 2007 a member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz and since 2010 of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts , the Saxon Academy of the Arts and the Berlin Academy of the Arts . In 2011 he was elected a member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry . Seiler was a guest of the Villa Aurora in Los Angeles and the German Academy Rome Villa Massimo . In 2007 Lutz Seiler was awarded the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize for the story Turksib . His collection of short stories, Die Zeitwaage, was nominated for the Leipzig Book Fair Prize in 2010 . For his debut novel Kruso , published in September 2014, he received the German Book Prize . The novel was translated into 22 languages, adapted several times for the theater and filmed by the UFA. For his novel Stern 111 he received the Leipzig Book Fair 2020 prize in the “ Fiction ” category .
