Fontane Prize of the City of Neuruppin

The Fontane Prize of the city of Neuruppin was donated in 1994 on the occasion of the 175th birthday of Theodor Fontane from his native city of Neuruppin . Until 2007 there was the prize in two classes, the Fontane Prize for Literature and the Fontane Prize for Art and Culture ; the award ceremony originally took place on December 30th of the year of the award, the birthday of Theodor Fontane. Since 2010, the award ceremony has been part of the Fontane Festival , which the city of Neuruppin organizes every two years at Whitsun.

Until 2004, the Fontane Literature Prize of the Fontanestadt Neuruppin was awarded every five years, since 2010 it has been awarded every two years. It is endowed with 5,000 euros. The handover was carried out by the mayor of the Fontanestadt Neuruppin in cooperation with a representative of the jury.

In relation to Theodor Fontane's special achievement as a master in describing the country and its people, the award is aimed at travel writers, travel journalists or authors who are or have been active in this sense. The entire literary oeuvre or an outstanding work can be decisive for the award. One or more authors can be honored with the award.

The decision on the winner is made by an independent jury of five people. The jury members are proposed by the mayor of the Fontanestadt Neuruppin and determined by confirmation of the city council of the Fontanestadt Neuruppin. The jury can be composed of representatives of the Theodor Fontane Society , representatives of the Theodor Fontane Archive , writers, winners of the Fontane Literature Prize of the Fontane City of Neuruppin, literary critics, literary scholars, publishers, media experts, etc.

On the occasion of Theodor Fontane's 200th birthday in 2019, the prize was renamed the Fontane Literature Prize of the Fontane City of Neuruppin and the State of Brandenburg and the endowment was increased to 40,000 euros. From now on, the award is to take place every two years in Neuruppin.

Fontane Culture Prize of the Fontane City of Neuruppin

The culture prize is awarded every two years by the mayor of the Fontanestadt Neuruppin. The prize is endowed with 2,000 euros.

The prize is aimed at artists and cultural workers or sponsors who are particularly committed to artistic and cultural development, diversity and / or to positioning themselves as a “Fontanestadt Neuruppin” cultural city, or with their special artistic or cultural aspects Services are or have worked for / or in the Fontanestadt Neuruppin.
