Sigrid Damm (born December 7, 1940 in Gotha ) is a German literary scholar and author of numerous works on the "Weimar four stars" Wieland , Goethe , Herder and Schiller .

Life

Sigrid Damm grew up in Gotha, where she attended the 1959 Arnoldi school their Abitur took off. From 1959 to 1965 she studied German and history at the University of Jena . She then worked as a university lecturer in Jena and Berlin . In 1970 she earned her doctorate in philosophy with the thesis "Problems of Human Formation in the Drama of Hauptmann , Hoffmannsthal and Wedekinds " . In addition, she worked as an author on a “History of German Literature” published by Volk und Wissen Verlag . Since 1978 she has lived and worked as a freelance writer in Berlin. In 1993 she was a visiting professor at the universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow , and in 1994 at the University of Hamburg .

Sigrid Damm is primarily the author of works on people from the Weimar Classic . In particular with her books, written in a mixture of biography and fiction , about Goethe's childhood friend Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz and Goethe's wife Christiane von Goethe , she achieved great audiences. Most of her novels are from the 18th century.

Sigrid Damm is a member of the PEN Center Germany and the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature . On December 14, 2010, following a resolution by the city council, she was the first woman to be granted honorary citizenship of her hometown Gotha.

Her sons are also artistically active, Joachim Hamster Damm (* 1965) as a set designer and Tobias Damm (* 1969) as a computer graphic artist .
