The publishing house was founded in 1945 in Berlin and Leipzig . The folk-and-knowledge-state-owned publishing house Berlin also brought the journals in addition to textbooks for all the districts of the GDR The New School and New kindergarten education out. Heinrich Deiters , Wilhelm Heise and Erwin Marquardt founded the publisher's educational library in 1947 . Hans Friedrich (IM) Lange (1891–1972) (author of books himself) was chief editor from 1946 to 1958. Editor-in-chief was u. a. Doris Weathercock . In 1951, Fritz Rücker (1892–1974) , the former minister of education for the state of Brandenburg, which was in the process of dissolution, became head or deputy head of the main management and from 1952 head of the main pedagogy department of the Volk und Wissen publishing house and from 1956 to 1959 pedagogical director.

The political change in 1989/90 brought the publishing house the largest order in its history. Since the existing school books (also produced by Volk-und-Wissen-Verlag) consistently represented the ideology of the SED and were therefore no longer usable after the transformation of the GDR's educational system , a total of 26.5 million school books with neutral representations were printed in 1990. Existing holdings of old school books were blamed .

In the spring of 1991 the company was privatized by the Cornelsen publishing group, the group now appeared under the name Cornelsen. People and knowledge in the market. Since then, the publisher has been one of the largest school book publishers in Germany and is the market leader in the five new federal states. In 1995 the publishing house acquired the North Rhine-Westphalian Kamp-Schulbuchverlag and has since been called Volk und Wissen / Kamp Verlag .

Volk-und-Wissen was retained as the publishing brand of Cornelsen Verlag, to which other publishing brands belong. The holding company has its offices in Berlin, Munich and Mülheim an der Ruhr .

Until 2004 the seat of the publisher

In 2004 the publishing house was spatially integrated into Cornelsen-Verlag, and since then both publishers have been working together in Berlin-Wilmersdorf . The building previously used in Berlin-Mitte was occupied by the Zimbabwean Embassy .

The publishing program includes school books and other educational media for almost all types of schools and subjects in Germany.

In 2019, the Saxon Ministry of Education banned the use of the natural sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Physics - Colors . The work published by Volk und Wissen / Kamp Verlag in 1998 contained racist formulations such as negrid , europid and mongolid racial circles , but had not been available in bookshops for several years.
