The Book Art Foundation is a foundation under civil law that was established in 1966. It is based in Frankfurt am Main and has an office in Leipzig . The Book Art Foundation critically monitors German book production. The focus is on the utility book.

The most beautiful German books

The Book Art Foundation organizes the annual competition The Most Beautiful German Books . It is one of the most prestigious prizes for book designers, typographers and graphic designers in Germany. The sponsors are the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels e. V., the German National Library and the cities of Frankfurt am Main and Leipzig . The sponsors are the State of Hesse , the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media and the Friends of the Book Art Foundation. V.

The competition “The Most Beautiful German Books” is about the diverse aesthetic and functional demands that are placed on books and the successful combination of content and form. Since 2012, 25 “most beautiful German books” have been awarded. These are characterized by first-class design, conception and workmanship and are at the same time the nominations for the prize of the Stiftung Buchkunst , endowed with 10,000 euros , which has been awarded since 1984 for “the most beautiful German book”.

The award-winning books are shown in a traveling exhibition and documented in an annually published, sophisticated catalog .

Prize for young book design

Since 1989, the foundation, in cooperation with the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media, has also been awarding the sponsorship prize for young book design , which recognizes extraordinary ideas for printed books or hybrid book forms in order to identify and show developments in the book design medium. This award is in three parts and is endowed with 2,000 euros each.

Most beautiful books from all over the world

In 1991 the Buchkunst Foundation was commissioned to organize the world's most unique international book design competition, the most beautiful books from all over the world , which has been held in Leipzig since 1963 . An independent, international jury selects the 14 most beautiful each year. The highest award is the Golden Letter .
