Stephan Füssel

Stephan Füssel (born March 24, 1952 in Hildesheim ) is a German book scholar , university professor and author . Since 1992 he has been university professor for book studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz .

Life

After graduating from high school in Hildesheim, Füssel studied German, history and political science at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . In 1977 he passed the state examination for teaching at grammar schools in the subjects of German, history and education, and in 1983 he received his doctorate in German philology at the University of Göttingen. Since 1983 he was first academic advisor, then senior assistant in the subject of modern German literature at the University of Regensburg . In the 1992/93 winter semester, Füssel was appointed to the Chair of Book Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. He is head of the Institute for Book Studies there and at the same time director of the "Research Institute for Reading and Media". In the years 2005–2008 he was also dean of the newly founded Faculty 05: Philosophy and Philology.

Work and awards

Füssel has emerged as a book author with numerous publications on book and publishing history, in particular on early European printing and on the person of Gutenberg , the inventor of European book printing. As a book scholar he works in numerous scientific societies , for example he was president of the " Willibald Pirckheimer Society for the Study of Renaissance and Humanism " from 1988–2001, and from 1991–1998 a member of the board of the "Wolfenbütteler Arbeitskreis zur Geschichte des Buches" "and has been a board member of the" International Gutenberg Society " since 1993 and has been the publisher of the Gutenberg yearbook since 1994 .
