Gutenberg Yearbook 2009

The Gutenberg yearbook is considered to be one of the most important periodicals on book printing history and book studies . The yearbook has been published by the Gutenberg Society in Mainz, at that time under Aloys Ruppel , since 1926 .

It appears annually in June on the occasion of the general meeting of the Gutenberg Society. The contributions are published in German, English, French, Italian, Spanish and Latin. The respective head of the Institute for Book Studies at the University of Mainz is responsible for the publication . This has been Stephan Füssel since 1994 .

The yearbook focuses on early printing and research into the life and work of Johannes Gutenberg . It also contains articles on the history of book printing , libraries , the book trade, publishing, writing , as well as typesetting and printing processes , book illustration , book cover , newspaper and press affairs and developments in the new media and typography .

The Gutenberg yearbook was one of the few periodicals that were allowed to appear uncensored and continuous during the Nazi era , although it had an “international” claim. This was due to the emphasis on the German art of printing and its German invention on the one hand from a “neutral” depiction that did not rub against any ideology, and on the other hand from subtle self-censorship. To date, there has not been a publication that has critically dealt with the role of the Gutenberg Society and the appearance of this membership period under National Socialism.
