The International Gutenberg Society in Mainz eV is an international association for research into the history and development of printing technology, typography and font-oriented media based in Mainz . The aim of the statutes is also to promote the Gutenberg Museum and the publication of scientific texts on printing research.

history

The company was founded in 1901. The impetus was the decision to build a Gutenberg Museum in Mainz on the occasion of the celebrations for the 500th birthday of Johannes Gutenberg .

On June 26, 1901, the museum opened its doors and the Society met for the first time and drafted statutes . On July 20, 1901, the first board was elected. The then Lord Mayor of Mainz, Heinrich Gassner , became the first chairman and Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse took over the protectorate . After successful advertising campaigns, the society had 613 members who held their first general meeting on June 24, 1902. In the early days, the museum and society were closely linked to the Mainz City Library in terms of space and staff . In the war years, the society was on the verge of dissolution due to a decline in membership, a lack of donations and grants. Thanks to a loan from the city of Mainz and the efforts of museum director Aloys Ruppel , this could be averted and the society celebrated its 25th anniversary with the publication of a commemorative publication.

From 1926 the international Gutenberg yearbook and small prints of the Gutenberg Society appeared as periodicals. A separation from the city library followed when the museum moved (from 1927) to the Zum Römischen Kaiser ” building . The expansion of the museum also resulted in greater international attention from society. During the time of National Socialism and the Second World War, progress was wiped out, among other things by restructuring and the destruction of the premises. Society and museum began with the new collection and securing of the holdings as well as the reconstruction. Contacts abroad and international recognition were regained. As part of the 2000th anniversary of the city of Mainz (1962), the museum reopened. The company moved the museum into the renovated rooms of the “Zum Römischen Kaiser” house , which was supplemented by a new building for the exhibitions.

Since the Gutenberg year 1968, the annual Midsummer Night has been held in memory of Gutenberg. The Gutenberg Prize, established in the same year, has been awarded regularly since then.

Since 1988, students have received a reduced membership fee. This meant an increase in the younger members. Jost Hochuli worked out today's corporate design in 2005. In 2001 the company celebrated its 100th anniversary.

Composition and management

Today the society has more than 1,600 members from 30 nations. The Mayor of Mainz presides over the association (July 2016: Michael Ebling ). The board includes the director of the Gutenberg Museum, the president of the Johannes Gutenberg University and the holder of the chair for book studies in Mainz. A total of seven people, plus the honorary presidents and up to 14 other people appointed by the general meeting. The board of directors awards the title of senator to deserving members of society. Julia Bangert is the managing director.
