Lotte Hellinga , also Hellinga-Querido , FBA (born 1932 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch book historian .

biography

Lotte Querido comes from a Jewish - Sephardic family of Portuguese origin; her grandfather was the publisher Emanuel Querido . Her grandparents were murdered in the Sobibor extermination camp in 1943 ; Other family members, such as the mentally handicapped son of her great-uncle Israël Querido , Arie, were victims of the Holocaust (he was deported to Auschwitz in 1943 from the psychiatric hospital Het Apeldoornsche Bosch .)

She studied at the University of Amsterdam under Wytze Hellinga (1908–1985), her future husband. In 1958 she received her doctorate on the Otia by Constantijn Huygens . She received a grant from the Nederlandse Oganisatie voor Zuiver-Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek to research 15th century letterpress printing in Great Britain . From 1967 to 1976 she taught at the University of Amsterdam. From 1988 to 1991 she was Deputy Keeper at the British Library and from 1992 to 2002 she was Secretary General of the Consortium of European research libraries . In 1990 she became a Fellow of the British Academy and was a member of the Council from 1991 to 1994.

Her research focus is on early Dutch printing. She also researched the Mainz Catholicon and participated in the creation of the Incunabula Short Title Catalog .

In 1989 Lotte Hellinga was the first woman to be awarded the Gutenberg Prize of the City of Mainz .
