- July 28: President Herbert Hoover orders the military evacuation of Bonus Army camps along the Anacostia River outside the federal capital Washington using tear gas, planted bayonets and tanks under the command of Douglas MacArthur . The peaceful protesters are World War I veterans who are demanding early payment of their bonus payments, which were not due until 1945, in view of the economic hardship of the Great Depression , which Congress rejects. The brutal action taken against fellow citizens in great economic need, which was felt by large sections of the American population to be particularly heartless, cost the unpopular Hoover further sympathy and contributed to Roosevelt's landslide victory in the fall.
