Gert Prokop (born June 11, 1932 in Richtenberg , Western Pomerania , † March 1, 1994 in Berlin ) was a German writer . He is particularly known for his books for children and young people ; he also wrote radio plays , science fiction and detective novels .

Life

Gert Prokop grew up in his hometown. In 1950 he moved to Berlin. Prokop first studied at the Weißensee art college for two semesters before becoming a journalist at Neue Berliner Illustrierte . From 1967 to 1970 he worked as a film documentary artist in various films by the Heynowski & Scheumann studio (named after Walter Heynowski and Gerhard Scheumann ).

From 1971 Prokop worked as a writer. On March 1, 1994, he committed suicide in the face of an incurable disease and the threat of years of infirmity.

Works

Gert Prokop's youth detective novel Detective Pinky , which tells the story of the orphan boy Pinky (based on the Pinkerton detective agency ), was a classic in GDR youth literature. The book was filmed in 2001 as Pinky and the million pug by Stefan Lukschy .

In 1971, on the occasion of a competition for utopian narratives, Prokop wrote a story called The Death of the Immortals (published in 1975 in Der Mann vom Anti ) about a dwarf private detective, whom he then had further adventures. These science fiction stories (collected in Who Steals Lower Legs? And The Sperm Bank Robbery ) are a form of social criticism . The adventures of Timothy Truckle, detective for the all-powerful corporate bosses in the totalitarian US of the future and at the same time agent for the underground movement, paint a dystopia with the surveillance of the individual by state institutions and an almost unlimited power of the corporations.
