The Kurd-Laßwitz-Preis is an undoped prize that is awarded annually by authors, translators, editors, publishers, editors, graphic artists and specialist journalists of German-language science fiction . With the help of the Kurd-Laßwitz Prize, outstanding achievements, especially in the field of German-language science fiction, are honored in order to support the winners and German-language science fiction.

The award was launched in 1980 based on the model of the American Nebula Award and named after the German science fiction author Kurd Laßwitz . The best production of the previous year is awarded annually. The prize was initially awarded in six categories (“novel”, “narrative”, “short story”, “translator”, “graphic artist” and “special prize”); In 1983 the category “Best Foreign Novel” was added, which in 1997 was renamed “Best Foreign Work”. In 1987 the categories "radio play" and "film" followed. While the "Radio Play" category has had its own jury since 1993, the "Film" category was integrated into the "Special Prize" category in 1996. In 1997 the categories “narrative” and “short story” were merged and since 2001 a jury of experts has decided in the “translation” category.

Nominations and voting are carried out by those entitled to vote, d. H. the authors, translators, graphic artists, editors, publishers, specialist journalists and former award winners who work professionally in the field of science fiction. The right to vote and the voting procedure are laid down in the statutes of the Kurd-Laßwitz Prize. In the voting results, a distinction is only made between winners and nominations, even if information about the number of points achieved in the vote per nomination can also be found on the prize website. These are for informational purposes only.

The award ceremony has been organized by Udo Klotz since 1991. Since 2000 (alternately since 2007) the awards have been held at the Elstercon in Leipzig and the Penta-Con in Dresden .
