Herbert Rosendorfer, 2009

Herbert Rosendorfer (born February 19, 1934 in Bolzano ; † September 20, 2012 there ) was a German lawyer, writer and caricaturist.

Life

Herbert Rosendorfer was born in 1934 in the Gries district of Bolzano . From 1939 to 1943 he lived in Munich . In 1943 his mother and the children moved to Kitzbühel to live with their grandparents because of the war , and in 1948 they returned to Munich. After graduating from high school, he studied stage design for a year at the Academy of Fine Arts , but from 1954 onwards he studied law at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1963 he passed the second state examination and from 1965 worked as a court assessor and public prosecutor in Bayreuth . In 1967 he became a district judge in Munich. From 1993 he was a judge at the higher regional court in Naumburg . In 1990 he was appointed honorary professor for Bavarian literary history by the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . Since his retirement in 1997 he lived in Appiano in South Tyrol.

Herbert Rosendorfer has created an extensive opus which, in addition to novels and short stories, also includes plays, television plays, historical works, treatises on music, travel guides, librettos as well as compositions and paintings (mainly drawings and watercolors). A large part of his texts can be classified as fantastic literature . He was also a master of realistic and historical narration, which he often had satirical to grotesque features. For example, he invented the composer Otto Jägermeier - together with the pianist Karl Betz from the University of Würzburg - who found its way into various music lexicons. In his novel A Lover of Odd Numbers he plays with the character of the writer Florious Fenix (who has obvious parallels to JD Salinger ) and his refusal to enter into literature since 1965. His legal training and his experience in legal professions can be seen in works such as Ballmanns Leiden or Textbook for Bankruptcy Law and The Thursdays of the Chief Public Prosecutor , which describe everyday legal life with satirical swipes.

He had a long friendship with his stage publisher Per H. Lauke from Ahn & Simrock Bühnen- und Musikverlag , during the course of which he wrote works such as Die Kellnerin Anni , Die Hexe von Schongau , Oh Tirol or The Last On The Column , suburban miniatures , the commissioned work of the Augsburg Theater Time to speak, time to be silent - scenes from the last years of Father Rupert Mayer and Dem Manne can be helped (tragedy based on Schiller's Die Räuber ). In recent years Rosendorfer has written other pieces such as The Merchant of Theresienstadt , The Witch of Kurtatsch and the Affenparade . Rosendorfer transferred the musical rights to his bestseller Letters in the Chinese Past to the publisher . He was a member of the PEN Center Germany .
