German Science Fiction Prize

The German Science Fiction Prize (spelling partially without hyphens) is a literary prize and has been awarded annually by the Science Fiction Club Germany (SFCD) since 1985 . Along with the Kurd-Laßwitz Prize, it is one of the most renowned awards for science fiction literature in Germany. From 1985 to 1998 the prize was awarded as the "SFCD Literature Prize".

From the beginning, the SFCD was primarily dedicated to German-language science fiction and began to award selected works with the so-called club seal as an audience award.

Since 1985 the SFCD has been honoring the best German-language novel and the best German-language short story of the previous year. The prize (currently 1000 euros per category) will be presented to the winners during the SFCD annual congress. The German Science Fiction Prize is the only endowed award for SF literature in Germany.

A prize committee decides on the award of the prize. Every year it has the task of reading and evaluating all German-language texts published in the past calendar year. Its working method is laid down in rules of procedure. This is how the German Science Fiction Award differs E.g. clearly from the Kurd-Laßwitz-Preis , since only here also somewhat unknown texts of high quality have a chance of being appropriately recognized.

The committee currently consists of 10 members and is reassembled every year. In the meantime, a group of employees has grown over the years. However, additional volunteers will be accepted at any time. You do not have to be members of the SFCD.
