Christopher Ecker
Christopher Oliver Ecker (born October 28, 1967 in Saarbrücken ) is a German writer and literary critic .
life and work
Christopher Ecker studied German and philosophy in Saarbrücken and Kiel . In addition to his work as a writer, translator and literary critic (including for the FAZ , Saarbrücker and Berliner Zeitung, as well as for Saarland , South German and Austrian broadcasters ), he teaches German and philosophy at the Heinrich Heine School in Heikendorf near Kiel . Ecker's most successful book is the thousand-page novel “Fahlmann”, published in 2012, which the critic Denis Scheck described as “one of the great reading adventures of contemporary German literature”. In 2015, Ecker was awarded the Friedrich Hebbel Prize for his previous literary work, in particular his novel “Fahlmann”. According to the jury, the novel “Fahlmann” is “one of the most excessive reading adventures that contemporary German literature has to offer. In Ecker's novel, in which the son of a funeral director embarks on the stony path of a career as a writer, bizarre fantasy and a realism saturated with puns and sharp observation of details form a surprising connection time and again. "
In 2018 Ecker received the Saarland Art Prize . The jury praised Ecker as a writer who "in over two decades with great literary seriousness created a work based on the experience of his Saarland origins". Ecker has "a broad repertoire of different types of text". His “handling of language and form, as playful as it is confident, paired with his ingenuity”, makes his work a “special reading experience”. Minister of Culture Ulrich Commerçon called Ecker a "tireless contemporary narrator, whose novels wonderfully combine fantasy and philosophical worldview while not forgetting wit and a sense of the realistic."
