Saarland Art Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Saarland Art Prize is the most important cultural prize in this German state.

The prize is awarded every two years by the Saarland Minister for Education, Culture and Science to recognize outstanding artistic achievements. The prize, endowed with € 7,500, is awarded alternately in the fields of music, literature and the visual arts; it is not advertised, applications are not possible. The prize can also be awarded to young artists (up to 40) as a sponsorship prize. The prizewinner should have his / her place of residence in Saarland , be born in Saarland or be connected to the cultural life of the state. The respective award winner is determined according to a procedure prescribed in the statutes: a seven-person committee of experts prepares candidate proposals, then a five-person jury recommends the award winner. The proposal is confirmed by the minister.

The Saarland Art Prize was first awarded in 1959, initially on an annual basis. It is considered the most important cultural award in the state.
