Leo Erb (born January 21, 1923 in St. Ingbert , † October 21, 2012 in Kaiserslautern ) was a German artist .

biography

Erb attended the arts and crafts school in Kaiserslautern from 1940 to 1943, where the St. Ingbert artist Albert Weisgerber had previously completed his first training at the turn of the century. In 1946/1947 he attended the school for arts and crafts in Saarbrücken . There he mainly studied with Boris Kleint , who represented the Bauhaus theory ( color type theory ) of the Bauhaus educator Johannes Itten . In the early years (1948/1949), Erb set up his own studio in his hometown.

During this time he created his first linear paper cuts, sculptures and "line drawings". In 1957, together with his teacher Boris Kleint and other young Saarland artists, he founded the “Neue Gruppe Saar”, which was part of the avant-garde at the time. From around 1958 he began his structured "line pictures" and "line reliefs", which he u. a. 1958 in Düsseldorf as part of the 7th evening exhibition "The red image" of the ZERO group in Düsseldorf.

In 1961, Erb moved to Paris, where he lived until 1975 and worked in his self-built studio. During this period he further developed his line work and created "linear light objects", "solar sculptures" and kinetic objects. In 1977 he took part in Documenta 6 in Kassel . Through the entire work of Leo Erb “the line” and the color white in all shades runs like a red thread. This core theme of his concerns all of his work groups such as hand drawings, material pictures, reliefs, sculptures, kinetic objects, light objects and hand prints. In Erb's work “... the great Bauhaus doctrine returns, radicalized and concentrated on its essential elements. Many of Erbs line images and line objects can be read both flat and spatially. Erb's lines are three-dimensional light ridges or shadow lines; they turn the pictures into things that are presented to the light, that live in the light ”(Lorenz Dittmann).
