Like the previous year , 2012 was shaped by the Arab Spring . In Syria , the civil war continued throughout the year; in Egypt , an Islamic constitution was adopted in a referendum amid ongoing protests.

In Europe (especially in the euro area ), the year was particularly marked by the euro crisis. Especially in the countries Greece , Spain and Italy , which were badly hit by the crisis , there were protests against the crisis policy of the European Union and against the policies of their own governments.

In Germany, after the attacks by the right-wing extremist terrorist group NSU were uncovered and various investigation mishaps were uncovered, there were fundamental discussions about the work of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution ; the demand for a new ban procedure against the National Democratic Party of Germany became loud. On December 14, 2012, the Federal Council decided by a large majority to apply again to the Federal Constitutional Court for a ban on the NPD . The judges dismissed the request in January 2017.

meteorology

  • February: cold spell in Europe ; more than 600 people perish, mostly homeless people .
  • In the USA, there is a "century drought": In July, the highest temperatures recorded in this period since measurements began in 1895 are recorded in some cases. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) calls on the USA to reduce its biofuel production from corn in favor of food production, at least 30% of the corn plants withered, on the commodity markets the corn price rose by approx. 60% from mid-June to mid-July , the grain price reached its highest level in 1.5 years. Fears were raised of a repeat of the great dust storms ( Dust Bowl ) of the 1930s. The Mississippi reached historic lows.
  • July/August was also exceptionally hot in some parts of southern Europe, resulting in severe and extensive forest fires.
  • At the beginning of August, a large and strong hurricane - like storm that was unusual for the time of year swept across the Arctic , causing summer ice loss there to climb to its highest level since the 1970s (when satellite measurements began over the Arctic).
