Like the previous year , 2012 was shaped by the Arab Spring . In Syria , the civil war continued throughout the year; in Egypt , an Islamic constitution was adopted in a referendum amid ongoing protests.
In Europe (especially in the euro area ), the year was particularly marked by the euro crisis. Especially in the countries Greece , Spain and Italy , which were badly hit by the crisis , there were protests against the crisis policy of the European Union and against the policies of their own governments.
In Germany, after the attacks by the right-wing extremist terrorist group NSU were uncovered and various investigation mishaps were uncovered, there were fundamental discussions about the work of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution ; the demand for a new ban procedure against the National Democratic Party of Germany became loud. On December 14, 2012, the Federal Council decided by a large majority to apply again to the Federal Constitutional Court for a ban on the NPD . The judges dismissed the request in January 2017.
