Jonathan Douglas "Jon" Lord (* 9. June 1941 in Leicester , England , † 16 July 2012 in London ) was a British musician who primarily as a founding member of hard rock - band Deep Purple became known. Lord is considered one of the pioneers in combining rock with classical music .

Life

1950s and 1960s

Both his father and aunt were performance artists who showcased their talents as a duo with a local dance group. Lord developed his first musical activities on the family piano, where he received classical lessons from the age of five. As a teenager, the musical performance impressed him Jazz - organist , as Jimmy Smith and the pioneers of the rock 'n' roll -Pianos as Jerry Lee Lewis .

At the age of nineteen, Lord moved to London in 1960, where he studied acting at the Central School of Speech and Drama . When the Drama Center London split off from it in 1963 , Lord moved there with other teachers and students and completed his studies there in 1964.

Attracted by the music of Swinging London , Lord began to play in various jazz and rhythm and blues combos, most of which appeared in smaller pubs and club gigs in the London area. He was able to celebrate his first successes with the Bill Ashton Combo , a jazz group named after the saxophone player.

In 1963, Jon Lord joined the band Red Blood and his Bluesicians , led by Derek Griffiths , which enabled him to get his first electric organ.

According to his own statement, he can be heard as a pianist in the recording of the Kinks hit " You Really Got Me ".

Over the next few years, Jon Lord developed the skills to become a professional musician. He joined the more bluesy-rocky Artwoods as organist , the bandleader of which was Art Wood, the older brother of the later Rolling Stone Ron Wood . The Artwoods released several singles and EPs, including what is now a collector's item, Art Gallery , appeared on television and radio shows and made many appearances, but failed to hit the charts, so they soon broke up after their last attempt to hit the charts below the Achieving the pseudonym St. Valentine's Day Massacre also failed.

Ron Wood later recorded three instrumental numbers with Jon Lord under the name Santa Barbara Machine Head .

Deep Purple

The Flower Pot Men , who were more of a vocal ensemble and had a psychedelic hit, were looking for musicians for a booked tour and hired Jon Lord as well as Nick Simper and the drummer Carlo Little, who already played with Ritchie Blackmore in the Screaming Lord Sutch's Savages .

Shortly thereafter, Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore founded Deep Purple , and Nick Simper was also hired as bassist. Between 1968 and 1976 Deep Purple was considered one of the most popular and creative bands, with Jon Lord's virtuoso Hammond organ playing a major part.

Between the recordings of various hard rock albums and numerous world tours with Deep Purple, he always found time for solo projects. At times with the support of Deep Purple, such as 1969 with Concerto for Group and Orchestra or in the form of solo albums such as Sarabande or Gemini Suite , he combined rock music with classical music. For the film The Last Rebel (1971) he wrote the music with Tony Ashton , which was recorded by Ashton, Gardner & Dyke .

Paice Ashton Lord and Whitesnake

After Deep Purple broke up for the first time in 1976, Jon Lord, Ian Paice and Tony Ashton formed the band Paice Ashton Lord , which released the album Malice in Wonderland in 1977 . After a tour and while preparing for another album, Paice Ashton Lord broke up in 1978.

Jon Lord then became keyboardist with David Coverdales Whitesnake , where he was followed in 1979 by Ian Paice. During the successful years with Whitesnake, Jon Lord made guest appearances on various albums by Cozy Powell , Graham Bonnet and many others and recorded another solo album with Before I Forget .

Jon Lord, who left Whitesnake in 1984 in favor of a new start with Deep Purple, recorded another six albums with the group and toured with them worldwide.
