Pete York (born August 15, 1942 in Middlesbrough ) is an English drummer of rock , jazz and blues . He became known in the 1960s as a member of the Spencer Davis Group and the Hardin & York duo .

Life

After finishing school, York went to Birmingham to play as a drummer in a jazz band . He joined the Spencer Davis Group , which recorded their first record in 1964. The group's biggest hits were Keep On Running (1965) and Gimme Some Lovin ' (1966). 1969 York left the Spencer Davis Group and performed with Eddie Hardin duo Hardin & York on - sometimes the World's Smallest Big Band (the smallest big band called the world). The success was remarkable. Hardin & York performed with bands like Deep Purple . 1972 was the starting year for Pete York's Percussion Band with three drummers, a guitarist and a brass section. Guest drummers were u. a. Ian Paice , Keef Hartley , Roy Dyke and Keith Moon . From 1973 Pete York played at Klaus Doldingers Passport , where colleagues such as Alexis Korner , Brian Auger and Johnny Griffin were guests. In 1974 York performed at Jon Lords Rock Meets Classic . That year there was also a revival of the Spencer Davis Group . In 1975 York recorded the album Bali Agung on Bali with Eberhard Schoener . He went on tour with Klaus Doldinger and recorded the album Sarabande with Jon Lord . In 1976, York recorded the album Echoes of Ellington with Chris Barber and his band and toured Africa and Australia with them .

On June 16, 1977 Pete York married his girlfriend Mecky (née Meeder), whom he met in 1974 at a party after a concert in Munich. Their daughter Stephanie was born on May 3, 1979.

York's next band, Pete York's New York, lasted until 1983. In addition to his own band and tours with Chris Barber, Pete York repeatedly made guest appearances with well-known musicians such as Dr. John and Charlie Watts . York also participated in the Rock and Blues Circus with Chris Farlowe , Jon Lord and Colin Hodgkinson .

In 1984 Pete York moved with his family to Germany , to Berg am Starnberger See . York's daughter Stephanie named the group Daddy and the Steamers . In 1986 the cartoon Dracula Junior was made , for which York had written the story and which the band provided with their voices. York also wrote Curtain Down, Film Down for the TV show ! , in which he also played music and appeared in various skits and roles. Super drumming with Ian Paice , Louie Bellson , Cozy Powell , Gerry Brown and Simon Phillips was produced. From 1989 to 1990 there were sequels of Super Drumming with Billy Cobham , Jon Hiseman and other well-known musicians. Also Villa Fantastica continued. From 1990 onwards, York toured regularly in January with his jazz band Hollywood Swing . There were also tours with Daddy and the Steamers .

In 1992 York celebrated its fiftieth birthday with an open air concert in front of 80,000 visitors in Switzerland . There were other revival festivals. a. in Scotland and Holland . York played for three months in a club in Berlin . From 1994 York played with Jon Lord & the Gemini Band . From 1995 there was the Pete York Big Band , which had swing classics in the program. York made his first appearance with Drummin 'Man , a tribute to Gene Krupa , at the Birmingham International Jazz Festival . The Blue Jive Five emerged from the big band . York was constantly on the move with all of his band projects. In 1998 he played for the hundredth birthday of George Gershwin , a year later it was the hundredth of Duke Ellington , in 2000 the centenary for Louis Armstrong followed .

2000 saw a Hardin & York revival . York played with Jon Lord at an international symposium of Nobel Prize winners in Zermatt . In 2003 the Spencer Davis Group gave concerts with the Troggs and the Yardbirds .

In 2002 Pete York celebrated his sixtieth birthday and his silver wedding anniversary. In September he played swing and R&B with colleagues in front of a sold out house in Starnberg . Occasionally York appears with Helge Schneider . The trio York, Schneider and Jimmy Woode played a central role in Schneider's film Jazzclub - The early bird catches the worm . In 2005 he founded the formation "Drum Legends" together with Herman Rarebell (dr; ex-Scorpions) and the jazz drummer Charly Antolini . In the same year they released the CD Live 2005 and the DVD Live In Gran Canaria . From 2006 to 2011 York toured again with Helge Schneider of Germany, Austria and Switzerland and also performed with the Radio Kings of Martin Breinschmid as well as an accompanist of Martin Schmitt on.

In addition, York always finds time to realize his own jazz and blues projects with changing line-ups. In 2017, Helge Schneider and York released the album Heart Attack No. 1 .

Instruments

At the time of the Spencer Davis Group, Pete York played a Rogers brand drums, in the configuration: bass drum, hanging tom, floor tom, snare, hi-hat, as well as three cymbals and a splash cymbal, plus a cowbell. Later he added another floor tom. It has remained very consistent in this combination, and is now played by the Pearl brand .
