The Spencer Davis Group is a British rock band, and was founded in 1963 in Birmingham ( England ) from Spencer Davis ( guitar and vocals ), Steve Winwood ( organ , piano and vocals), Muff Winwood ( bass ) and Pete York ( drums founded). The band had their first appearances in the Golden Eagle Pub, later they appeared regularly in the Marquee Club in London .
history
The group's first single was a cover version of John Lee Hooker's Dimples . Their second single, I Can't Stand It , originally from The Soul Sisters , already made it into the charts. The first big hit was Keep on Running , as well as number one in the UK as well as Somebody Help Me after that . Other hits followed with When I Come Home , Gimme Some Loving and I'm a Man . In 1965 and 1966 three successful albums were released . A significant hallmark of the band was Steve Winwood's throaty soul voice, trained on Ray Charles , which gave the group's songs their specific note. This manifests itself in the cover version of the Ray Charles classic Georgia on My Mind . In early 1967 the single Det war was released in Schöneberg on the Fontana label in Germany .
Steve Winwood left the band in 1967 and founded his own group Traffic in order to better realize his musical ideas and solo leadership claims. After the departure of their front man, the success decreased noticeably. After various line-up changes, the band broke up. There was a brief reunion in 1973, but without Spencer Davis and Steve Winwood.
A few years ago the Spencer Davis Group was on tour regularly with the following line-up: Spencer Davis (guitar and vocals), Eddie Hardin (keyboards and vocals), Colin Hodgkinson (bass and vocals), Miller Anderson (guitar and vocals) and Steff Porzel ( Drums).
The group currently exists in two line-ups, SDG USA and SDG Europe, of which Spencer Davis is the only joint member.
