Spencer Davis (born July 17, 1939 in Swansea as Spencer David Nelson Davies , † October 19, 2020 in California ) was a British rock musician ( vocals , guitar , keyboards , harmonica ). In 1963 he founded the Spencer Davis Group , which had some big hits in the 1960s.

Life

Davis was born in Wales in 1939 . He studied languages ​​and was fluent in German, French and Spanish. However, his passion has always been music. In 1963 he founded the Spencer Davis Group . He performed with future stars like Bill Wyman and Christine Perfect . In 1970 he moved to California and recorded a few solo albums. He played in a blues and folk band . As the manager of a record company, he promoted artists such as Robert Palmer and Bob Marley .

In the early 1980s he recorded the solo album Crossfire with artist friends . From 1984 he went on tour again, initially through Europe and the Middle East . There were colleagues like Pete York , Brian Auger and Chris Farlowe . In the 1990s he toured Australia , Japan and Canada and repeatedly through the USA and Europe. In 1993 he recorded the album The Classic Rock All-Stars with other rock musicians and went on tour with them until 1995. After that he went on to play under the name The Spencer Davis Group.

In 1997 he joined the World Classic Rockers . He worked for film, television and in advertising. In 2001 the Spencer Davis Group was on the road again, in the line-up with Pete York , Eddie Hardin , Colin Hodgkinson and Davis. In 2002 they played on Queen Elizabeth 2 . In the meantime, Davis played with the Rock and Roll Army , along with Mitch Ryder , Chuck Negron and Rick Derringer . In autumn 2008 a new solo album So Far was released . In March 2015 he performed in Munich in the formation with Pete York, Eddie Hardin, Armin Donderer and Steff Porzell.

Spencer Davis died in October 2020 at the age of 81 years from the effects of pneumonia . He leaves behind his partner and three grown children.
