Rick Derringer (born August 5, 1947 in Fort Recovery , Ohio ), actually Rick Zehringer , is an American rock musician (guitar, vocals), songwriter and producer.

life and career

With the McCoys , Derringer had the hit Hang On Sloopy in 1965 , which pushed Yesterday by the Beatles from first place on the charts in America .

In 1969 Derringer went to Johnny Winter as a musician and producer along with the other McCoys . They played as his backing band on the albums Johnny Winter And and Johnny Winter And - Live - the And stands for The McCoys . Derringer wrote rock and roll Hoochie Koo for Johnny Winter . With Johnny's brother Edgar he recorded Edgar Winter's White Trash and Roadwork .

In 1973 Derringer brought out the solo album All American Boy . He continued to work as a producer, songwriter and musician for the Winter Brothers, including for the albums Still Alive and Well and They Only Come Out At Night .

In 1976 Derringer founded the band Derringer , with whom he produced four albums. In 1983 he took another solo album with Good Dirty Fun . In addition, Derringer repeatedly played with well-known bands and musicians, such as Alice Cooper , Richie Havens , Todd Rundgren , Steely Dan , Cyndi Lauper , Barbra Streisand and Kiss .

In 1983 he released the album "Party Tested" with Carmine Appice as DNA.

In the mid-1980s, Derringer worked with Weird Al Yankovic , but continued to work for others. In 1985 he wrote and produced The Wrestling Album in collaboration with the World Wrestling Federation, including the song Real American , which later became the theme song of the wrestler Hulk Hogan .

In 1990 the album Edgar Winter and Rick Derringer Live was released in Japan . From 1993 Derringer recorded a series of four blues albums: Back To the Blues , Electra Blues , Blues Deluxe and finally in 2000 Jackhammer Blues . In 1999 he produced the album Winter Blues with Edgar Winter .

In 1997 Derringer brought out the album Tend The Fire . In 2001 he recorded DBA - Derringer, Bogert & Appice with Carmine Appice and Tim Bogert (formerly Vanilla Fudge ) . In 2002 Derringer made an excursion into jazz with Free Ride Smooth Jazz . The released single Hot And Cool was extremely successful in the jazz charts.

With his wife Brenda and children Lory and Martin, Derringer recorded two albums of Christian tracks, Aiming 4 Heaven and Still Alive And Well ( 2004 ).

In connection with the flood disasters in Southeast Asia and the hurricane devastation in the south of the USA, the musician organized the “Musicians for Disaster Relief” in 2005, a charity concert that also benefited the American Red Cross. At the concert at Universal Studios in Orlando , Florida , he brought together the groups Loverboy , Twisted Sister , Mark Farner from Grand Funk Railroad , Dickey Betts from the Allman Brothers , Eddie Money and Michael Bolton . Derringer played the guitar part of most of the acts and performed "Hang on Sloopy" and "Rock'n 'Roll Hoochie Koo" himself.
