The McCoys were an American band that had their greatest success in 1965 with the title Hang On Sloopy .

Band history

In 1962, brothers Rick (guitar) and Randy Zehringer (drums) formed the band Rick And The Raiders in Union City , Indiana . Dennis Kelly was there on bass. After an interlude as The Rick Z-Combo and with Ronnie Brandon on keyboards and Randy Jo Hobbs instead of Kelly on bass, they finally called themselves the McCoys in 1965 . Brandon later left the group and in 1967 Robert "Bobby" Peterson took over on the keyboards for him.

The McCoys' first single, Hang on Sloopy , immediately stormed the charts (No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US ). Then they had more hits with Fever and C'Mon Let's Go .

In 1969, the core of the McCoys, the Zehringer brothers and Hobbs, joined Johnny Winter as a backing band. Rick changed his name to Rick Derringer .

Hobbs died of heart failure in a hotel room in Dayton, Ohio on August 5, 1993 (Derringer's birthday) at the age of 45. Peterson died on July 21, 1993 at the age of 47 in Gainesville, Florida.
