Billboard 200 is the major US album charts published by Billboard magazine that provides a weekly breakdown of the 200 best-selling albums in the United States for the accounting period .

Calculation basis

The Billboard 200 is largely based on album and EP sales in the United States. Download sales and streaming requests for individual tracks on the album are also included. The billing week starts on Friday and ends on Thursday. On the following Tuesday, the complete 200 top placements will be published. The print edition of the Billboard magazine will appear on Friday. The actual chart week then runs from Sunday to Saturday. The charts bear the date of the final Saturday.

Example for the charts with the date January 20th:
Billing week: Friday January 5th - Thursday January 12th
Release of the charts: Tuesday, January 16th
Charts valid week: Tuesday, January 16 - Tuesday, January 23

The figures are collected by Nielsen SoundScan from dealers who together make up around 90% of the total American market.

history

Billboard began publishing an album chart in 1945. Initially, this comprised only five items and was not updated on a weekly basis. In 1955, a two-week rhythm was largely adhered to, in which the 15-place list of best-selling popular albums appeared. The first weekly hit parade appeared on March 24, 1956 and was led by Harry Belafonte's album Belafonte . In 1956 the hit parade was renamed Best-Selling Pop Albums and in 1957 Best-Selling Pop LPs . During this time the length of the album charts fluctuated, but never exceeded the length of 50 places.

From the end of 1959 there were two different lists for mono and stereo publications with 150 and 50 places respectively, which were combined in 1963 in a complete list of 150 items. In April 1967, the list was expanded by 25 places and in May of the same year by a further 25 places, making it the current length. Andy Williams ' Days of Wine and Roses was the first number-one album on the Billboard 200.

Until 1991 the charts were created through dealer surveys. Since May 26, 1991 the sales data have been determined and summarized directly by Nielsen SoundScan . However, from this point on, only new releases were listed in the official charts. Albums that were released more than 18 months ago were included in the newly created catalog charts as soon as they left the Top 100 and no album song was listed in one of the airplay charts.

In 2009, the regulation meant that after the death of Michael Jackson and shortly after the re-release of the Beatles albums in a digitally revised form, the albums by these artists were in great demand and were among the best-selling albums, but not in the official ones Charts appeared. Therefore, it was decided at Billboard to break the separation. Since November 22, 2009, the Billboard 200 lists all albums that have been sold during the recording period, regardless of when they were released.

Due to the change in consumer habits due to technological change, a fundamental change was introduced in 2014. On the one hand, online music services offered not only the downloading of complete albums but also the option of downloading each individual album title and not just selected single titles. On the other hand, many music listeners chose to access various music streaming platforms as an alternative to purchasing music . Streaming had already been included in the Billboard Hot 100 in March 2013 , and one and a half years later, streaming views were also included in the rating of the albums. 1500 song views from one of the major subscription providers such as Spotify , Google Play or Xbox Music correspond to one album sale. Single track sales were also taken into account, namely ten song downloads are rated as one album download. The official Billboard 200 was determined according to the new criteria for the first time with the issue of December 13, 2014. The evaluation according to the system that was valid up to that point was continued as an additional chart list under the name Top Album Sales .
