biography

Childhood and youth

Bruno Mars was born in 1985 as Peter Gene Hernandez in Waikiki , a district of Honolulu on Oahu in the state of Hawaii , and grew up there. His mother is from the Philippines and his father from Puerto Rico . Hernandez is one of six children and comes from a musical family that introduced him to many styles of music from reggae , rock , hip-hop to R&B . From the age of four he appeared - especially as an Elvis Presley imitator - in the family-run band Love Notes, which celebrated success in Hawaii. He attended President Theodore Roosevelt High School, where he was part of the three-piece school band Dis Guyz for a year, finished it in 2003 at the age of 17, and then moved to Los Angeles to begin a musical career. Hernandez's stage name Bruno Mars , according to his own statements, was partly derived from his nickname Bruno, derived from the wrestler Bruno Sammartino , as he had a strong stature as a small child.

Musical career

In 2004 he signed a contract with Motown , which did not result in any published music. Instead, Mars made the acquaintance of Philip Lawrence, a musician and producer who was also under contract with Motown. After only one year with the label, the two decided to continue working independently of the label and were signed a short time later by Steve Lindsey and Cameron Strang at the small label Westside Independent. The two also worked with other artists, trying to improve their songwriting skills. The first successes came, for example, with the sale of the song Lost, which they wrote, for 10,000 US dollars. In 2006 Mars met the VP of Atlantic Records , Aaron Bay-Schuck, who offered him a contract three years later.

Mars began his career as a music producer and produced for Flo Rida , Alexandra Burke , Travie McCoy , Adam Levine , Brandy , Cobra Starship , BoB , Sean Kingston and the Sugababes , among others . His first single was called Nothin 'on You , where he was a guest musician alongside BoB. The song reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2010 and became Mars' first number one hit in the US and number 1 in the UK and the Netherlands . Mars was also involved in the production of the hit and wrote the song with BoB Hernandez and released his relatively unsuccessful debut EP called It's Better If You Don't Understand in May 2010 . The only single was The Other Side with Cee Lo Green and BoB

His debut album , Doo-Wops & Hooligans , was released in October 2010 in the US; in Germany it was released in January 2011. In May 2010 Mars wrote the song Billionaire for Travie McCoy , Mars himself provided the vocals. The song reached number 4 on the US charts, number 3 on the UK charts and was his second number one hit in the Netherlands. In addition to great success as a co-writer for songs like Flo Ridas Right Round , K'naans Wavin 'Flag and Cee Lo Greens Fuck You! Bruno Mars also publishes his own singles. His solo debut single Just the Way You Are was released in July 2010. It was also able to build on the success of the previous singles and again reached number 1 in the USA and Great Britain. In January 2011, Grenade Mars' second own number one hit in the US.

At the Grammy Awards 2011 Bruno Mars received the Grammy for the song Just the Way You Are in the category "Best Male Vocal Performance". In cooperation with the from Trinidad & Tobago coming R & B - singer Gold 1 and the US rapper Jaeson Ma appeared on September 14, 2012 will be the first dance -Song This Is My Love . The single was able to reach the charts in many European countries. His second studio album Unorthodox Jukebox was released in December 2012. The first single Locked Out of Heaven was released in October 2012; Mars sang the song with Sting at the 2013 Grammy Awards . It also became a number one hit in the US, as did the second single When I Was Your Man . In 2014 he got his second Grammy for the pop singing album of the year for the album.

In February 2014, Mars appeared with the Red Hot Chili Peppers in the Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show at MetLife Stadium . He had another appearance in February 2016 with Coldplay and Beyoncé in the Super Bowl 50 halftime show at Levi's Stadium .

His third album 24K Magic was released in November 2016 . The lead single of the same name was already released from the album in October 2016. The song achieved gold status in Germany, among other places. The piece advanced to number 4 in the US and was awarded 4 times platinum for 4 million sales. That's What I Like reached the top of the US singles charts as the second single release. The studio album entered the German top 10 as Mars' third album. Platinum status was achieved in Great Britain and the USA, among others.

On the occasion of the Grammy Awards 2017 on February 12, 2017 in the Staples Center in Los Angeles a tribute was held for Prince , who died in April 2016 , in which Mars sang the song Let's Go Crazy (1984).
