You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) is a successful hi-NRG hit by the British band Dead or Alive . It was first released as a single in the fall of 1984 and became the band's most famous song.

Commercial breakthrough

After the commercial breakthrough in Japan and a few small chart successes in Europe, Pete Burns also strived for international success with his band, so they changed their music style from New Wave to Synthpop, which was very popular around the world at the time .

The title was produced by the team of three Stock Aitken Waterman . In November 1984 the single was released worldwide, but was initially only successful in Japan.

It wasn't until four months later that the song reached the top of the charts in Great Britain. High chart positions were also achieved in other European countries, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Norway. When the piece finally topped the charts in the USA and Australia, it finally achieved its breakthrough to become a world hit.

Video

The focus is primarily on the visual effects (Pete Burns in a purple kimono , in the second stanza four hands seem to grow out of his back, a disco ball that floats back and forth in the picture, the band members who are wrapped in a golden banderole become etc.). Towards the end of the video you can see the band members waving golden flags while Pete Burns sings the last verse in golden banderoles before the video ends abruptly. The video was produced by Vaughan Arnell and Andrea Benton .

New releases

After the band's popularity declined sharply since the mid-80s, Pete Burns decided to re-record the song a few times:

  • 1995 was a new remix version on their new album Nukleopatra (was also released as a single)
  • In 1997 the 1995 version was remixed and released as a single
  • In 2000 the song was remixed as a bonus track on the album Fragile
  • In 2001 the band remixed the song again and pressed it onto the remix album Unbreakable
  • In 2003 the band took on a new version, which was released as a pre- single from the best-of album Evolution
  • In 2006 the last version of the song was released as a non-album track on a single

The rhythm and lyrics of these versions do not differ, but the songs were equipped with techno and dance passages in order to keep up with the now very popular Eurodance . The singles from autumn 1995 and mid-1997 were not very successful, but with the remix released in mid-2003 the band managed another top 10 hit in Japan and entered the German charts again. With the version released in early 2006, the song came back into the top 5 in Great Britain.
