Mr. Irish Bastard is a German Irish- folk punk - band from Münster .
Band history
The band was formed in mid-2006 by singer Mr. Irish Bastard, banjo player Gran E. Smith and tin whistle player Lady Lily. These three had played in an Irish punk band before. Then there was the bassist Boeuf Strongenuff, with whom The Irish Bastard had also played in a band for years. Other band members were Ron Calli and Mitch Mackes. In the first few years the line-up changed frequently, until the four founding members - reinforced by the drummer Ivo K'Nivo - emerged as a permanent line-up. In the studio and on tour, this regular line-up is supported by various other musicians, the “Traveling Bastards”. These include guitarists P and Moe Leicester. Occasionally, former members are also on stage. Lady Lily left the band in 2017.
After only two months of existence, the band was invited by The Levellers to play in the opening act of their European tour. This was followed by a headlining tour and a tour with Fiddler's Green in autumn 2007 to spring 2008.
After the release of their first EP St. Mary's School of Drinking , which the band sold more than 3000 times in their own distribution, the debut album The Bastard Brotherhood followed in early 2008 , which, like the EP, was released on its own label Reedo Records. Further publications in Japan and China followed with the University of Hard Knocks (2008) and Fortune & Glory (2009). A live video of Last Pint was published in 2008 on the DVD for Tribal Area DVD-Mag # 8 in SLAM alternative music magazine # 37.
In January 2009 the band gave a television concert on Bielefelder Kanal 21 , which was also released on DVD. The band toured Germany in 2009 and played at many festivals, including the Open Flair , Vainstream Rockfest and the Serengeti . In addition to China tours in 2009, 2017 and 2019, there was a tour through Japan in March 2010. The band also played in Italy, the Czech Republic, Taiwan, Poland, Austria, Sweden, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Ukraine, the Netherlands and England. In July 2010 they played as the opening act for The Pogues in Münster.
In 2010, the band's own label Reedo Records released the second album for the German market, A Fistful of Dirt . Furthermore, Mr. Irish Bastard are featured on the samplers Almost St. Patrick's Day , Almost St. Patrick's Day, Vol. II and Rising Suns (Japan) as well as in the soundtrack of the independent film Townies by the Boston filmmaker Mike O'Dea.
In 2018 and 2019, Mr. Irish Bastard were also at other major festivals, such as the Wacken Open Air , Rockharz Open Air , Summer Breeze , Reload Festival , Open Flair and much more. with their current album The Desire for Revenge .
Since their inception, Mr. Irish Bastard played more than 600 concerts and, in addition to headlining shows at festival appearances , shared the stage with bands such as The Pogues , Flogging Molly , Dropkick Murphys , Broilers , The Levellers , Millencolin , Fiddler's Green , Maxïmo Park , In Extremo , Deichkind , Sick of It All , NOFX , Bloodhound Gang , Kraftklub and others.
style
Musically, Mr. Irish Bastard move in the footsteps of The Pogues as well as those of classic punk and traditional Irish folk . Occasionally, however, they also take up other genres of music such as Ska . The repertoire also includes cover versions of well-known songs such as Temple of Love by The Sisters of Mercy , Livin 'la Vida Loca by Ricky Martin , Why Can't I Be You? by The Cure , You Spin Me Round by Dead or Alive or Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper , which are presented in the style of folk punk.
