Irish Folk is a name for Irish folk music that is popular around the world . In the English-speaking world and in Ireland in particular, Irish Traditional Music ( Irish ceol traidisiúnta na hÉireann , German: Irish traditional music) is spoken of.

Irish folk music is based on rhythmic vocal pieces that were accompanied a cappella , so-called puirt a beul ( mouth music or lilting ) and sean nós singing . Bagpipes and drums were also used in military contexts .

In the field of pop and rock , borrowings from Irish folk music and the use of corresponding instruments such as uilleann pipes and low whistle have a long tradition. Irish Rebel Music is a sub-genre of Irish folk that is often played with the same musical instruments. It has the poetry of Irish nationalism as its subject and has been in favor of the Irish Republican Army and Sinn Féin since the 1920s . The music form adopts traditional instrumentation and mixes it with new forms of music such as hip-hop and pop music. Irish rebel music has gained international attention in the recent past. For example, was A Nation Once Again music band Wolfe Tones from the BBC World Service at number one in 2002 selected. The ballad The Men Behind the Wire , performed by the band Barleycorn, was number 1 on Ireland's hit list for a total of five weeks at the beginning of 1972. Individual pieces of Irish Rebel Music were temporarily banned on the radio and led to controversy. For the 18th time the Folk Festival took place in Duisburg-Rheinhausen. Another festival takes place every two years in the castle ruins of Volmarstein . Other folk festivals cover a wider spectrum, including Irish folk, such as the Tønder Festival in Tønder, Denmark .
