Irish Folk Open Air Poyenberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Irish Folk Open Air Poyenberg is an Irish Folk Festival that takes place annually in the municipality of Poyenberg in Schleswig-Holstein .

history

After the general interest in the tent festivals organized by the local Bully Club had subsided at the end of the 1990s , the club was looking for a new, sustainable event concept. The result was the open-air event, which has been held annually in June since 2001, with a stage on which Irish folk bands perform, as well as the "International Market", on which different countries are presented with typical food and drinks.

In the first year two bands played in front of a few hundred visitors from the immediate region; the “international market” represented nine countries. In 2009, tickets were sold twice in one year for the first time (for 2009 and for 2010 in advance sales). Even in the pre-sale for 2011, the tickets were sold out after just a few days. In 2011 seven bands played and the “International Market” represented 16 countries; the festival had around 5000 visitors. In 2015 the festival took place for the 15th time.

present

The audience comes from Northern Germany , Denmark and the Netherlands . The Irish Folk Open Air Poyenberg is now the largest festival of its kind in Schleswig-Holstein and one of the largest in Germany. The festival has around 8,500 visitors annually. The festival lasts one evening. Camping areas and parking spaces are offered on the directly adjacent meadows. The festival area is surrounded by forest on three sides.

The stands on the “International Market” are organized by associations from the region, whereby creativity is often given more weight than culinary authenticity.

organizer

The Bully Club as the organizer is a volunteer-run association with members from the region, primarily directly from Poyenberg. In terms of the purpose of the association, which is comparable to that of rural youth , it differs essentially in the history of its origins in the late 1980s.
