Folk-Punk , sometimes also called High Speed Folk , describes the mixing of style elements and approaches of punk music with elements of folklore music and / or folk rock . The first Irish folk punk band were The Pogues, founded in 1981 . Bands like The Levellers , New Model Army or The Men They Couldn't Hang were also associated with this subgenre. The more well-known representatives of folk punk today include the Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly, as well as Fiddler's Green and Across the Border in Germany .

The Pogues achieved regional fame in the London pub and bar scene in the early 80s , with their albums Rum, Sodomy & the Lash and If I Should Fall from Grace with God they were also in the USA and Asia , e.g. B. in Japan , very well known. Her single, Fairytale of New York , released in 1988, became a hit, helping folk punk gain a wider audience. If I Should Fall from Grace with God reached third place on the UK charts and Fairytale Of New York second.
At the same time as the Pogues, The Men They Couldn't Hang developed a similar style, albeit less based on Irish folk . Her first single, Green Fields of France , hit the UK indie charts, received heavy airplay on the John Peel Show and finished fourth in the Festive Fifty . With their albums Waiting for Bonaparte and Silver Town , the band achieved further successes, Silver Town reached 39th place in the British charts, making it the group's most successful album.
The Scottish band Nyah Fearties began to combine folk music with punk rock in 1982 - a year after the Pogues. The group also played a part in the folk punk scene and even accompanied the Pogues on a tour of France . The Pogues 'drummer Andrew Ranken made a cameo as a singer on the Nyah Fearties' first album . However, the group had no commercial success and never achieved more than regional notoriety, although they still have a loyal fan base today.
In 1989, Thunder and Consolation , the fourth album by the post-punk band New Model Army , was released, which was shaped by strong folk influences and the use of the violin . Since then this band has also been associated with the style of folk punk. The album reached 20th place in the British charts, in Germany the album received a gold record .
In the 1990s, bands such as The Levellers , The Mahones , Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys , founded in 1988, gained fame, and today these are among the most sought-after groups of folk punk. The bands 'albums often reach high chart positions, the most successful folk-punk albums in recent years were the 2011 flogging Molly album Speed Of Darkness and the Dropkick Murphys' Going Out In Style from the same year .
There is also a folk-punk scene in German-speaking countries. Well-known German bands are z. B. Fiddler's Green , Across the Border , The Porters, and Mr. Irish Bastard . In Austria, for example, Living Lâche and in Luxembourg Schëppe Siwen are representatives of the style. The band Roaring Jack existed in Australia from 1985 to 1992 , the singer Alistair Hulett later being successful as a singer-songwriter . Today The Rumjacks are probably the best-known Australian folk punk group. In Canada , the Real McKenzies are one of the most important folk-punk bands, the group is strongly associated with their Scottish origins in appearance and music style. The Chicago band The Tossers and the Young Dubliners are also associated with the style.
