Scheppe Siwen is a Luxembourg music group Folk Punk plays in Luxembourg language.

history

The group was founded in December 2009 by the three musicians Jojo, Lio and Chris. The aim was to celebrate the drummer's birthday on March 17th, 2010 during St. Patrick's Day in the cult bar Vis-à-vis with a concert. This concept has been maintained and since then the band has been playing their traditional concert on St. Patrick's Day in this bar every year. The following year the band expanded by two members, Michel Lauff on bass and Isabelle Chaussy on accordion.

In November 2012 they released their first studio album Schëppe Siwen and presented the CD at the end of the year in the capital club Exit07 with the French bands RIC (Roots Intention Crew) and La Fanfare en Pétard. In the same year, they also supported the 'Télévie' fundraising campaign and continued to cooperate with this non-profit organization in the years that followed.

In 2013 the group stood up for the initiative against the oppression of women and played a concert in Pfaffenthal (in the famous blues and jazz concert hall 'Sang & Klang') after the performance of the play The Vagina Monologues . The concert was played in a specially made t-shirt with the words 'I love my Vagina' (for women) and 'We love her Vagina' (for men).

A concert as part of the distillery day 'Walk, Taste, Enjoy 2013' on the Moselle brought the band together with the Diedenacker distillery, which has existed since 1862. Together they made the 'Drëppe Siwen', a sweet liqueur made from fir tree needles.

In 2014 the group grew to 7 members. As part of the Ice Hockey World Championship Div. III in Luxembourg, the band released their only ever English-language song called Fight , which they performed on the ice rink during the opening ceremony.

In the same year they played u. a. with the Red Hot Chilli Pipers , The Luxembourg Pipe Band and Cara at the Zeltik Festival in Dudelange. At the end of the following year they could be seen on stage in Beaufort together with the German cult band 'City' , Serge Tonnar & Legotrip and the rapper Tommek. Many people remember her concerts at the 'Schueberfouer' fair , even if the massive stage collapsed at her last concert there.

In January 2016 they released their second studio album Sprëtztour with a small festival in which 7 different bands and more than 40 musicians performed in the cult club Melusina. The second album was recorded at Linster Studios in Frisange and mastered at Skywalk. In the same year they shared the stage with the internationally acclaimed musicians Carlos Núñez , Bodh'aktan , Beoga and The Levellers . In addition, the band played three concerts in the United States in mid-2016 at the request of the Luxembourg Ministry of Culture.

style

Schëppe Siwen in the current line-up

Their music can be integrated into the field of folk rock, with most of the songs containing elements from different musical styles. So you can z. For example, you can find punk elements, ska rhythms, Balkan jazz, waltzes as well as folkloric sounds that are emphasized by the use of the trumpets.

The texts are based, among other things, on their own interpretation of literary works (Nana or Steppewollef), on stories from everyday life (Fraleit, Party an der Staat, Zatz) and address social problems in a socially critical manner (De fräie Fall, Ruthless , Mäin Lëtzebuerg). Their music is characterized by a fast tempo and uncomplicated melodies. The lyrics and melodies are in-house productions and all songs, except for the title Fight, are in Luxembourgish.

Reviews

“With violin, accordion, guitars, bass, drums and trumpets, the Luxembourg folk rock band“ Schëppe Siwen ”enchants its audience. After several years of discovery, the group has developed an original style based on traditional music, cool beats, fun and original Luxembourgish lyrics. "

“Schëppe Siwen started us off on the“ Pub Stage ”, blasting away under the warm, orange light bulbs spanning across the ceiling. Their Luxembourgish lyrics were an interesting addition to the folk-rock performed by the energetic 7-piece group. Organizers led by John Rech asked the group to perform two sets that night, as the Baltic Sea Child sadly had to cancel. The pressure was on, and despite it being a little heavier and modern for crowds rather preferring Irish jigs and more laid-back sounds, they succeeded at creating a fun party. "

- Wort.lu

“In their songs, the band makes the worthwhile effort to tell little stories. The musicians get their inspiration for the happy but also gloomy content (“Däwel”, “De fräie Fall”) from life or from stories that they have heard and which have convinced them. Apart from a few - very catchy instrumental songs ("Crossing over to Ireland" and "Soldier's Joy") - singer Jojo gives the songs a special touch with his dark voice. "

- L'Essentiel

“In the Brasserie Aquarium, people jostled for the best seats. There the five-piece band 'Schëppe Siwen' shook the restaurant and created a lively atmosphere with Luxembourgish melodies and Celtic folk rock. In addition, the audience could shake their legs. "
