Cara is an Irish folk band from Germany, Scotland and Ireland. The band name comes from Irish and means 'friend'. Cara is the first German Irish folk band that was able to establish itself in the USA.

history

Cara was founded in 2003 by Gudrun Walther ( vocals , fiddle , accordion ), Sandra Steinort (vocals, piano , flute ), Jürgen Treyz ( guitar ) and Claus Steinort (flute, uilleann pipes , concertina ). Even before the completion of the first CD In Color , Rolf Wagels ( Bodhran ) joined the band. In Color was published in 2004 and received good reviews in Germany, but also in some other European countries. This was followed by tours in Germany and other European countries, including the Netherlands, France, Ireland and Denmark. In 2006, the band toured with Irish violinist Tola Custy as a guest musician after violinist Gudrun Walther broke her arm. The joint appearances took the band again to the Netherlands and Denmark, but also to England. In the spring of 2007, the second CD, In Between Times , was released, which was nominated for the German Record Critics' Prize. The US-based agency Real Good Music had already noticed Cara and signed the band. In August 2007 the first four-week concert tour took place in the USA. In October 2007 the band recorded a live DVD and CD in the Arsenaal Theater in Vlissingen ( Netherlands ), which was released in spring 2008. Also in the spring of 2008 there was a second extensive US tour, which also took the band to the west coast of the USA. Another tour in the USA took place in summer 2008 with guest musician Amanda Kehoe for Sandra Steinort.

In 2009 the band was invited as one of the headliners to the largest Irish festival in the USA, the Milwaukee Irish Fest . In addition to Milwaukee, the band also played at the Kansas City Irish Fest . On this tour Patricia Clark replaced Sandra Steinort. The increased presence in the USA and the musical performance of the band were rewarded in January 2010 with the Irish Music Award 2009 for Best New Irish Artist from the American Irish Music Association . In early 2011 Cara received the Irish Music Award 2010 from the Irish Music Association in the Top Group category.

The increasing demand for tours and performance dates made it more and more difficult for Sandra and Claus Steinort to combine professional life and commitment at Cara. Therefore both musicians left the band in spring 2010. New band members were the winner of the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards 2008 Jeana Leslie and the seven-time All Ireland Champion on the Uilleann Pipes Ryan Murphy. This new line-up toured the USA in summer 2010 and released the album Long Distance Love in October 2010, which was also nominated for the German Record Critics' Award shortly after its release and in November 2011 for Best New Irish CD at the Irish Music Awards. In 2013, Scottish singer-songwriter Kim Edgar replaced Jeana Leslie, who was starting college. On October 4, 2013, the album Horizon was released, which was also nominated for the German Record Critics' Prize. In March 2014, Tübingen-based Uilleann Piper and pipesmaker Hendrik Morgenbrodt replaced Ryan Murphy, who had to leave the band due to lack of time. On January 15, 2016, the fifth studio album Yet We Sing was released , which was recorded for the first time without a guest musician and represents the band's stage sound. In January 2018, the band was awarded the “Freiburg Head” culture prize at the International Freiburg Culture Exchange. After various live performances had been recorded in 2017, the album Live was released on February 1, 2018 by Galileo distribution with 13 - including seven previously unreleased - titles.
