The 15 songs were already written in 1987/88. Justin Sullivan's texts address various grievances; In addition to environmental degradation and alienation in the world of work, the family and its changed social role are critically reflected in some songs. This corresponds to the attitude of numerous other internationally known bands such as B. The Smiths or The Levellers during Margaret Thatcher's reign as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom .
The previously predominant stylistic influence of post-punk was extended to Thunder and Consolation . The album incorporates elements of folk rock and Irish folk . The collaboration with violinist Ed Alleyne-Johnson, who played several solo parts influenced by Irish folk and then was part of the live cast of New Model Army for hundreds of concerts, began here. Especially the song became known Vagabonds , who in the 1990s on several alternative rock - compilations published - usually without the long introduction of the solo violin. Family Life is a folk song accompanied only by an acoustic guitar, Nothing Touches only adds a few other sound effects to the guitar.
The sound shows a transition from the earlier emphasis on the bass lines to a sound pattern more oriented towards drums and guitar. Prominent is Inheritance , the "dry" the monitoring of voice to the blended drums and two spaced a small third hinged piano tones reduced. The recordings were made by Jon Kelly at Air Studios ( London ) and Andy Wallace in Quantum Sound Studio ( New Jersey ) mixed and finally by Steve Rooke in the Abbey Road Studios mastered .
The title of the album refers to the 1663 posthumously published work edition The Memorable Works of a Son of Thunder and Consolation by Quaker Edward Burroughs (1634–1662), who was captured several times because of his religious beliefs and died in custody. The artwork was designed - as with all of the band's other albums - by artist Joolz Denby , who is a partner of Sullivan .
