Characteristic for the genre are a relatively large number of band members, polyphonic singing and hardly any typical, but mostly acoustic, instruments. The texts show a metaphor-rich and pictorial language. Usually a melancholy and calm mood is conveyed. Indie folk basically shows influences from folk from the 1950s to 1970s, folk rock and indie rock as well as from low fidelity , country and at times even folk punk . There are also parallels between indie folk and New Weird America .

The roots of indie folk can be traced back to the 1990s , when folk singers like Ani DiFranco could no longer distinguish between alternative rock and folk when it came to musical influences .
