The Villagers are an Irish band led by singer-songwriter Conor J. O'Brien.

Emergence

O'Brien formed the band in 2008 after his previous project The Immediate split in spring 2007. The Immediate were considered an Irish hope, their 2006 debut album In Towers and Clouds , which was described as "one of the best Irish debut albums of the last twenty years", received a nomination for the Choice Music Prize , the band also joined the Meteor Ireland Music Awards . Nevertheless, the members announced their separation in May 2007 and justified this with "fundamental differences". O'Brien later said the band no longer fit into the life plans of two of its members. He himself began playing guitar in Cathy Davey's live band shortly after the breakup .

In February 2008, O'Brien released the EP Hollow Kind under the name Villagers with four tracks that he had recorded alone. He then put a band together that did a number of live performances in the second half of the year.

In April 2011, the live album Live at the Workmans Club was released in the UK and a split EP with Charlotte Gainsbourg was released at the same time as Set the Tigers Free / Memoir in the USA .
