The Dropkick Murphys are a in 1996 Quincy , Massachusetts , founded Irish-American folk punk - band .
The band describes their style of music as a mixture of punk rock , Irish folk , rock and hardcore punk .
Band history
In 1998 the Murphys released their first album after numerous singles and splits with Do or Die . Immediately after its release, singer Mike McColgan left the band to fulfill a long-cherished dream: he became a firefighter with the Boston Fire Department. His successor was the singer of the "Bruisers", Al Barr . (In 2002, however, Fireman McColgan decided to return to the music business and formed the punk band " Street Dogs ".)
After the second album The Gang's All Here , guitarist Rick Barton left the Dropkick Murphys in 1999. His self-chosen successor was James Lynch of the "Ducky Boys". Before the third album Sing Loud, Sing Proud , the band was strengthened by Mark Orell, Spicy MacHaggis (who was later replaced by Scruffy Wallace) and Ryan Foltz (who was later replaced by Tim Brennan). This album also features guest appearances by Shane MacGowan , singer of the Irish folk band The Pogues , and Colin McFaull, singer of the Oi band Cock Sparrer . MacGowan sings on the songs Good Rats and Wild Rover . The album Blackout features a rock version of the famous Irish song Fields of Athenry about the Irish famine in the mid-19th century. There is also a punk rock version of the Irish folk song The Black Velvet Band .
Dropkick Murphys have performed annually at the St. Patrick's Day Festival in Boston since 2001 .
In 2005 the band released a ballad version of Fields of Athenry in memory of the late US soldier Sgt. Andrew Farrar, at whose funeral they played the song live. In the same year the album The Warrior's Code was released , including I'm Shipping Up to Boston with the lyrics by Woody Guthrie .
The band featured on the soundtrack in Martin Scorsese's film Departed, entitled I'm Shipping Up to Boston . This title is also played in The Simpsons in the episodes Debarted and The Town .
On September 18, 2007, the album The Meanest of Times was released . It was their first album that was not released by HellCat Records. On October 17, 2007, the album was released in Japan via Solitary Man Records .
In January 2008 Marc Orrell left the band because he would like to continue his own style of music in the future. Tim Brennan then succeeded him as guitarist, while Jeff DaRosa took over Brennan's old duties as a new member.
On March 16, 2010 the live album Live on Lansdowne was released . The recordings for this were made from March 12 to March 17, 2009 in six consecutive days in the State Dome in Boston. The album consists of a live CD and DVD.
For the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 versions of the video game Guitar Hero 3 there is a "Dropkick Murphys Track Pack" for free download. This includes three songs by the band that can be replayed.
The tracks are all from the album The Meanest of Times :
- Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ya
- (F) lannigan's ball
- Famous for nothing
On March 1, 2011, the album Going Out in Style , which is about the Irish immigrant Cornelius, was released. Guest musicians include Fat Mike ( NOFX ) and Bruce Springsteen . The song The State of Massachusetts on the album The Meanest of Times (2007) is the theme music for the American television program Nitro Circus , which is broadcast by MTV .
In 2012 the Dropkick Murphys played for the first time at the Rock am Ring and Rock im Park festivals as well as at numerous other festivals in Europe.
On November 8, 2012, the video for Rose Tattoo appeared on the band's YouTube channel in advance of the new album Signed and Sealed in Blood . For the music video of the single Rose Tattoo , the band called on their fans to send photos of the band logo to the band or to have the band logo tattooed and document this on video. The album was released on January 8, 2013. For the sampler Respect Your Roots Worldwide , the band covered the Bruce Springsteen song Badlands .
On February 24, 2015, Famous for Nothing: A Tribute to Dropkick Murphys was released on "Take a Shot Records". Numerous bands cover well-known Dropkick Murphys pieces on it. Involved include the Barroom Heroes, Irish Moutarde, Skullians and The Gobshites. Together with front man Al Barr, the German street punk band Emscherkurve 77 also contributed a piece to the album that is sung entirely in German.
In June 2015, after a hiatus together, bagpiper Josh "Scruffy" Wallace and the band decided to part ways. An official successor has not yet been determined, but since then Lee Forshner has taken over the bagpipes for recordings in the studio and also live, without having been introduced as an official band member.
In November 2016 the release of a new album was announced, which finally took place on January 6, 2017. The album 11 Short Stories of Pain & Glory reached number 3 in the album charts in Germany, which is the highest position so far. The same applies to 4th place in Austria and 6th place in Switzerland. Detached singles are Blood , You'll Never Walk Alone and Paying My Way; the album also contains a song with 4-15-13 , which commemorates the victims of the attack on the Boston Marathon .
In 2018, Ken Casey was involved in a motorcycle accident, as a result of which he lost the feeling in his fingers due to a spinal disc injury. Until the injury is completely cured, he no longer appears as a bass player, but acts together with Al Barr as the frontmen . Since then Kevin Rheault has played the bass, who previously represented other musicians in the band from time to time. Like Forshner, Rheault is not listed as an official band member.
Just in time for the European tour that started on the same day in Mannheim , the band released the two new songs Smash Shit Up and The Bonny online on January 31, 2020 and announced a new album for August or September 2020. The tour ended three weeks later with a performance in London , even before concerts were canceled in Europe due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The concert in Boston, which took place every year on St. Patrick's Day shortly afterwards, had to be played without visitors, which is why it was streamed live for free under the title Streaming Up From Boston .
