St. Patrick's Day
The St. Patrick's Day ( Irish Lá Fhéile Pádraig ) is the day of remembrance of the Irish Bishop Patrick , who probably lived in the 5th century and the first Christian missionary in Ireland applies. His date of birth and death are not known; the date March 17th for the day of death first appeared in the 7th century. Some historians suggest that at least two individuals converged in the figure of St. Patrick as he is revered today. Patrick is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church .
Remembrance day
The Memorial of St. Patrick is in the Roman Catholic Church and the Anglican Church of Ireland on March 17 committed. As the saint is considered the patron saint of Ireland, the feast of the saint is a solemn festival in the Irish regional calendar .
March 17th is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland , Northern Ireland , the UK overseas territory of Montserrat and the Canadian province of Newfoundland . St. Patrick's Day is celebrated worldwide by Irish , Irish emigrants and increasingly also by non-Irish. In Dublin and most other Irish cities, large parades and a variety of activities make St. Patrick's Day a colorful festival. The largest parades take place in Dublin, Munich , New York , Boston , New Orleans , Chicago , Manchester and Savannah . There is also an annual parade and festival in the British capital, London .
On March 17th, green is the predominant color of partying Irish around the world; in some cities (e.g. Chicago) even the rivers are colored green on St. Patrick's Day. Uranine was used for this until 2003 . Plant dyes are used today because of the possible damage caused by uranine. Beer (but not Irish Guinness ) is sometimes colored green on this day. In the church year 2008, the liturgical day of remembrance was brought forward by the Roman Catholic Church to March 15, as otherwise it would have fallen into Holy Week, during which no festival or other commemoration can be celebrated. In 2020, most parades worldwide were canceled or postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Germany
Since 1996 there has been an annual St. Patrick's Day parade in Munich , in which not only Irish, Scottish and English, but also some German groups take part. It developed into the largest continental European parade and in 2007 attracted around 26,000 to 30,000 participants and spectators. The Munich parade does not always take place on St. Patrick's Day itself, but on a near-term Sunday. After the approximately two-kilometer parade from Münchner Freiheit to Odeonsplatz , there will be a stage program consisting of the traditional blessing of shamrock and performances by Irish bands and dance groups . The event is sponsored by the Lord Mayor and the Ambassador and Honorary Consul of the Republic of Ireland are also attending. On March 17th, several landmarks will be illuminated with green light in the evening in Munich as part of the worldwide “greening”. The Munich Hofbräuhaus was involved for the first time in 2016 , and the Allianz Arena , the Olympic Tower and the BMW Welt all shone in green.
In Göttingen , since 2001, the Jesuits have held an annual service in St. Michael on the feast of St. Patrick celebrated in English with a subsequent procession through the city center. In Nuremberg , the Open Church of St. Clare / Catholic City Pastoral Care has been offering a service in three languages (Irish, English and German) on St. Patrick's Day since 2005, which is held by a Jesuit priest from Dublin . It is Irish Folk played -music and there is a move by Nuremberg.
Since 2006 , after several private clan festivals, there has been an annual St. Patrick's Day parade in Waigolshausen in Lower Franconia , since 2008 with music from the Waigolshausen Music Association. In addition to the organizer of the McEL clan, members of the MacScott clan from Forchheim , representatives of the German-Irish Society Würzburg e. V., the Association of Friends of North Lanarkshire / Motherwell as well as an increasing number of Scottish clans and guests from Franconia . Before the start of the parade, there will be a prayer in the St. Jakobuskirche in Waigolshausen. Among other things, the shamrock is blessed. The parade refers, among other things, to St. Patrick's compatriots St. Kilian , Kolonat and Totnan , the Irish Franconian saints, whose heads rest in Würzburg.
Smaller parades have also been held in Karlsruhe since 2005 and in Schacht-Audorf in Schleswig-Holstein since 2007 . Since 2011 the St. Patrick's Festival Berlin has been celebrated with a parade through Berlin-Kreuzberg and Irish film screenings. In general, a lot of Irish pubs in Germany celebrate St. Patrick's Day with live concerts, where traditional, Irish or Celtic folk music is played, to which Irish dancing is usually possible.
Switzerland
Switzerland officially participated in greening for the first time in 2014. As the only contribution in the country, the Rhine Falls were illuminated in green for four evenings.
