The BMW Welt is a combined exhibition, delivery, adventure, museum and event location, at the Olympic Park in direct proximity to the BMW four-cylinder , in the Munich district 11 Milbertshofen-Am Hart ( Am Riesenfeld ). It was built from August 2003 to summer 2007. A solar system with an output of 800 kW is installed on the roof. The opening took place on 20./21. October 2007. The BMW Welt is the most popular tourist attraction in Bavaria.

history

At the end of the 1990s, the Board of Management of BMW AG decided to build a delivery center. The Oberwiesenfeld on Georg-Brauchle-Ring at the corner of Lerchenauer Strasse in Munich-Milbertshofen was chosen as the location . An architecture competition was announced, to which 275 architects submitted their proposals. A jury of experts approved 28 of these proposals for a selection process. At the end of 2001, the design by the Viennese professor Wolf D. Prix and the architects Coop Himmelb (l) au prevailed. Structural engineers were Bollinger and Grohmann .

Preparations for construction began in August 2003 with the demolition of what was then the BMW Olympia multi-storey car park and the excavation of the 14-meter-deep construction pit. The laying of the foundation stone for the BMW Welt took place on July 16, 2004 in the presence of the then Bavarian Prime Minister Edmund Stoiber and the Lord Mayor of Munich Christian Ude .

First, the shell of the basement was built. On November 2, 2004, the construction of the double cone began with the setting of the base points. As the construction work continued, the other parts of the building were also built. When the highest point of the roof structure had been reached, the topping-out ceremony was held in summer 2005 . An 8,000 m² photovoltaic system from Solarwatt was installed on the roof . The 15,000 m² glass panels were then installed in the facade of the main building and the double cone. This work was completed in November 2006.

The interior work followed. The handover to BMW took place in several steps. The first thing that was completed in March 2007 was the vehicle preparation in the basement. In the middle of 2007 the administration moved into the office wing of the BMW Welt and the automobile delivery could begin the trial operation. 1,000 BMW employees tested the BMW Welt in a dress rehearsal at the beginning of September 2007.

The original opening goal was planned for the 2006 World Cup. The opening ceremony took place on October 17, 2007 with 800 invited guests from politics and society. At the open house on the following weekend (October 19 and 20, 2007), visitors were able to visit BMW Welt for the first time. The regular vehicle handover started on October 23, 2007. Since 2009, the competition concerts for the BMW Welt Jazz Award have also taken place here.

On March 28, 2010, BMW Welt welcomed its five millionth visitor, on July 4, 2012, the ten millionth visitor, and in 2015 the twenty millionth visitor. With over three million visitors a year, that's twice as many visitors as in Neuschwanstein Castle .

construction

In the brand world , vehicles from the brands BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and BMW Motorrad, motorsport, innovations and technology are exhibited.

“The building does not have the boredom of a trade fair hall, it is not just a temple , but also a marketplace and communication center and meeting point for knowledge transfer,” said architect Prix at the opening ceremony.

The BMW Welt is in the immediate vicinity of the group headquarters, the BMW Museum , BMW Group Classic and the BMW plant in Munich. The area of vehicle delivery is intended to strengthen the dialogue with customers and visitors, and to create a special experience for customers when they pick up their ordered vehicle. The 100,000th vehicle was delivered in July 2013; on November 15, 2013, the first collection of an electric car, the BMW i3, took place at the premiere. Christine Haderthauer , then head of the Bavarian State Chancellery, was among the first to collect the goods .

The BMW i8 plug-in hybrid vehicle was first delivered to BMW Welt on June 5, 2014. The evening event was moderated by Thomas Gottschalk . The BMW i8 is the first production car with laser light technology and thus, according to GQ magazine, “the first of a new era”.

Gastronomic offers and services, information and shops with BMW additional products are also part of the BMW Welt and turn the facility into a mixed-use center . Visitors can also use various mobility services and rent a vehicle from BMW Rent or take advantage of the DriveNow car sharing offer .

Conference rooms are available in the BMW Welt event forum, which is also used for events.

Gourmet restaurant

The BMW Welt is home to the gourmet dining room , which was awarded two Michelin stars by head chef Bobby Bräuer in autumn 2014 .
